What has 'Smell the Glove' become a byword for ? A byword needs to be for something ! Did the author mean a byword for certain companies not stocking albums with contentious covers ?

[edit] byword

I've heard the term "smell the glove" used to describe a band's (or other artist's, though bands are most direct) weak/lame attempt at reinventing themselves by doing something somewhat predictable, obscene, and/or half-baked in an attempt to become more artsty. As in "Understand? was Naked Raygun's 'Smell the Glove'". But I can't cite anything offhand as a reference of where this has been done... and it's an aging, obscure reference (though perfect and hilarous if you've seen the movie) so I think it might be dying out.

[edit] Concept Art

I reverted the removal of my concept art made by User:Sparkhead . If you, User:Sparkhead , or even someone else, have some objection to the work and want to remove it, please give your reasons here. Otherwise, I will continue to put it back in. CowardX10 22:09, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

I removed it because it is not something from Spinal Tap. It is fan art. If every piece of fan art made it onto (semi-fictional) artist pages, they'd be flooded with it. If you can provide a reason that it's relevant beyond "it's something I drew and I want to put it up", please do so. Sparkhead 03:59, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

I would counter by saying that the fictitious first cover was never seen, and I put my image up before The actual first Smell the Glove cover, low resolution was here. Now that there is somewhat of an actual official image, I suppose I would accept the removal of my image more. I do not think, though, that it is unheard of for personal work to be put up in place of unavailable official work. In fact, The revised artwork for Smell the Glove is fan art as well and considering all the problems with copyright, a lot of biographical pages prefer to have privately taken images rather than use images from that famous person's website although it would be more official. And this wasn't simply random fan art, but to illustrate a possible concept of an album we never got to see. Anyway, I'll provide a link to my image here if others want to input on this. If there is support to put it back, I may do so. If there is indifference or people would rather it not be part of the article, then I won't. Finally, in the future, please provide the courtesy of saying why you are removing the work of others rather than simply doing it. CowardX10 06:37, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
