[edit] Factual basis of assertion regarding density of canyons in Utah?

What is the factual basis of the following assertion:

The U.S. state of Utah has the largest concentration of slot canyons in the world.

?

I can think of at least one other region (the Blue Mountains, just West of Sydney) that exceeds the total number of canyons in Utah, and is likely to exceed the density as well (the Blue Mountains are approximately 10,000 square kms in area - I don't know how large the area of slot canyons in Utah is).

[edit] Depth

"100–200 million years of windstorms and floods " according to one of the sites referenced by the Antelope page, that canyon had got 7ft deeper in one year. over those timescales the workd would be cut in half. Rich Farmbrough 16:36 29 August 2006 (GMT).

I can't vouch for the validity of the information on that particular site, but keep in mind that the rate of erosion can vary by several orders of magnitude depending on the properties of the exposed layers. It might take a quarter million years for one layer of stone to erode, which finally exposes another layer that is much more susceptible to erosion. -- Moondigger 17:36, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
