Sloan’s Ice Cream is a Florida-based and privately owned, ice cream chain in Southern Florida.
[edit] History
Sloan Kamenstein started Sloan’s Ice Cream in 1999 when he opened his first shop on Clematis Street in West Palm Beach, FL. Kamenstein opened another shop in Boca Raton, and recently opened a third one in Palm Beach Gardens. Kamenstein is a Cordon Bleu trained chef who has studied all over the world.
[edit] Ice Cream
Sloan's offers 47 ice cream flavors, many of which are Kamenstein's own creation. Some favorites include, Coffee-and-Doughnuts(coffee ice cream with chunks of Krispy Kreme doughnuts), Cookie Monster(sweet cream with 3 1/2 pounds of Oreo’s and 5 pounds of homemade chocolate chip cookies), and Apple Pie(vanilla-cinnamon ice cream and apple pie). Kamenstein begins with a cream base, custom-made to his specifications, and blends it with the appropriate ingredients in a two-speed "churning" machine. Next, the blended ice cream is pumped into a freezer box and enhanced with layers of caramel, cookies, chocolate or other mix-ins. The boxes are then placed into a blast freezer and frozen at minus-40 degrees for at least eight hours. The final product is stored in a walk-in freezer and maintained at minus-20 degrees.
[edit] Atmosphere
Sloan’s Ice Cream was ranked #4 on the 10 Most Unique Ice Cream Parlors in the US, by the author of “Everybody Loves Ice Cream.” At Sloan’s, shocking pink and lime green colors cover the walls; giant lollipops, miniature choo-choo- trains, candy and endless toys are all displayed in their fairy tale setting.
Sloan’s was also ranked #10 on the Travel Channels Top Best Bathrooms in the entire world. Kamenstein and his store are known for this famous bathroom. The bathroom has clear glass doors that look right into the parlor. When you turn the door handles, the glass fogs up and becomes completely opaque. The doors are made of two panels of glass. Between the panels is a mixture of polymer and liquid crystals. A constant electrical current keeps the crystals in line and the glass transparent. But when the door handle is locked, the current is stopped, the crystals fall, and the glass looks clouded.
