Slinger

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A "slinger" is an ancient/medieval soldier who uses a sling (weapon).

The Slinger is a breakfast meal. It typically consists of two eggs, hash browns, and a hamburger patty all covered in chili. This is a St. Louis classic. The eggs can be any style. There is a particular brand of chili in St. Louis called Edmunds Chili which is delivered with beans and without. A quality slinger will also be served with grated cheese and onions.

St. Louis diners currently serving the Slinger include the South City Diner, the Courtesy Diner, the O.T. Hodge Chile Parlour, Tiffany's Diner, the Eat Rite Diner, the Chili Mac Diner, and Spencer's Grill. There are numerous variations including the "Top One" which will have a tamale served on top of the Slinger. Even a vegetarian slinger is available at some establishments, including the veg-friendly Shangri-la Diner.

To quote Road Food, "The ultimate kill-or-cure chile meal (which, in our opinion, only tastes right after midnight), is known as a slinger. That is two bunless cheeseburgers crowded onto a plate with fried potatoes, topped with a fried egg, then blanketed with chili. The chili is garnished with grated cheese and chopped raw onions."

The Slinger can also be found at the Diner Grill on Chicago's north side.
