SlimBrowser is a tabbed multiple-site web browser that uses the Microsoft Trident rendering engine. It incorporates a large collection of features like built-in popup killer, skinned window frame, form filler, site group, quick-search, auto login, hidden sites, built-in commands and scripting, online translation, script error suppression, blacklist / whitelist filtering, URL Alias.
[edit] Features
Tab handling
- SlimBrowser supports tabs in multiline or single line mode with horizontal scrolling.
- You can drag the tabs to change their position arbitrarily.
- You can rename tabs so it creates a fixed name for that particular site.
- Middle click gesture or double click gesture to close (double click doesn't work on multiline tab mode, but does on multiline button style).
- The primary differences between tab and button mode is that the tab you are using is always going to be on the top line, it acts like other normal tabbed controls. Button mode however means they stay in position, which can make managing a lot of sites at once easier.
- Tabs can be saved in groups, which can then be opened at any time from the groups menu. Alternatively you can choose to open only sites from that group, or indeed have SlimBrowser open a group on startup.
- If the browser crashes, it will remember the tabs you had open, and offer you the option of loading them all back up.
- You can restore your previous session's tabs from the file menu (you can also have it do this behaviour by default).
- Refreshing of pages can be done en masse - it also has a function to refresh a page automatically - you can choose the time delay.
Content filtering
- Universal URL Filter: Block advertising banners, Flash animations, iFrames or any components within any web pages by URL patterns.
- Popup blocker, with fully recoverable popups and list of recently suppressed sites.
- Hide sites without needing to close them, then recover them at any time in the Hidden Sites list.
- Download control: Choose at any time whether to render pictures, videos, sound, scripts, Java and ActiveX.
Searching & shortcuts
- Search bar comes built in with many popular sites.
- You can create a search entry for most sites through the "Extract Search Engine Data" option, which is easy to use.
- You can create an alias for a site so as to navigate to it quickly in the address bar. For example typing "wiki" in the address bar could be set to yield http://www.wikipedia.com/.
- The AutoLogin facility allows you to create an instant shortcut to a website you would normally need to type a username and password for - you type your username and password into the site, then choose the option to "Add AutoLogin from Current Page" and you can then save an entry to login instantly, which although obviously shouldn't be used on a public machine, or any site you need the most security for, can be convinient for trivial logins.
- The search bar can also be used to highlight all instances of a word on a page, and to search for a word on a page (without highlighting).
User interface
- The browser has built in skinning capability, and can also be viewed without skin (as thus following the current windows scheme).
- Toolbars can be customised, reducing the number of buttons and the size, and whether captions are viewed.
- Tabs can have site icons, based on user preference.
- The text in the interface is stored in standard .txt files, so can be easily translated or modified. Indeed, SlimBrowser comes with many UI languages built in.
- Pages can be zoomed freely using simple keyboard shortcuts (even content such as flash).
- The weather for your location can be chosen to display in the status bar.
- The browser as of a recent version has full Unicode support.
- Supports most Internet Explorer toolbars.
- Supports XML based toolbars.
- RSS feed parsing. (Although this feature is not without flaw - you need to change http:// to rss:// for SlimBrowser to parse the xml file correctly). You can however customise the template it uses to render feeds.
- You can have Favourites, History, Folders (explorer) and ScriptPad open in a side bar which you can toggle quickly with a keyboard shortcut for easy access.
- ScriptPad is a built in HTML/VBScript/Jscript/Text editor with syntax highlighting.
