Sligo-Leitrim (Dáil Éireann constituency)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sligo-Leitrim is a constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas. The constituency has an electorate of 70,460 and at present is served by 4 Teachtaí Dála (TDs). The method of election is the Single Transferable Vote. The constituency spans the entire area of the two counties in the province of Connacht, taking in Sligo, Carrick-on-Shannon and many other areas.
The Sligo Leitrim constituency is just one of a number of constituencies that will be changing at the next general election. The current Sligo-Leitrim division will be changed into the new constituencies of Roscommon-South Leitrim and Sligo-North Leitrim.

[edit] History
The Sligo-Leitrim constituency was created under the Electoral (Amendment) Act 1947, replacing the two previous constituencies of Sligo and Leitrim. Its size and representation were revised on several occasions, summarised in the following table:
Years | TDs | Boundaries | Law | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
1947–1961 | 5 | The full territory of both counties | Electoral (Amendment) Act 1947 | Constituency created |
1961–1969 | 4 | All of County Sligo, and all of County Leitrim except for those areas which were included in the Roscommon constituency | Electoral (Amendment) Act 1961 | Adjustments to maintain voter-to-seat ratio at near national average. Most of the Carrick-on-Shannon and Mohill areas now in the Roscommon constituency |
1969–1977 | 4 | All of County Sligo; and all of Leitrim, except the parts in the constituencies of Donegal-Leitrim and Roscommon-Leitrim. | Electoral (Amendment) Act 1969 | Large parts of County Leitrim moved to the two new neighbouring constituencies |
1977–1981 | 3 | All of County Sligo; in County Donegal, all of the Bundoran area and part of Ballyshannon; in County Leitrim, parts of the Kinlough and Manorhamilton districts. | Electoral (Amendment) Act 1974 | Major revision as part of the "Tullymander". Constituency is now effectively Sligo - Southmost Donegal and the small area of North Leitrim which was in the old Donegal-Leitrim constituency |
1981–1992 | 4 | The full territory of both counties | Electoral (Amendment) Act 1980, Electoral (Amendment) Act 1983 | Restored to 1948 boundaries, but with reduced representation due to population decline. No change under the 1983 Act |
1992–2002 | 4 | The full territory of both counties | Electoral (Amendment) Act 1990, Electoral (Amendment) Act 1995 | No changes |
2006/7— | — | Constituency abolished. | Electoral (Amendment) Act 2005 | The two counties will be represented through the constituencies of Roscommon-South Leitrim and Sligo-North Leitrim |
