Slick Shoes is a pop punk band with Christian origins from Southern California. They formed in 1994 and had their first release as a self-titled EP in 1997. They released 5 full length CDs, 4 of them on Seattle based Tooth and Nail Records. They also released an EP, a split with Autopilot Off and a "Best Of..." CD entitled The Biggest & The Best (featuring 3 previously unreleased songs). Their sound could be described as fast and melodic, occasionally with a rough-edged hardcore punk. The band name comes from the hit 1985 movie The Goonies from which the character Data exclaims, "I've got a great idea, you guys! Slick shoes!"
The band consists of founding member and singer Ryan Kepke and Joe Nixon (drums) who played on every release. Jeremiah Brown (bass) played on all releases except their final release Far From Nowhere. This was their first release without Tooth and Nail Records, which they left not for religious reasons (the band's new guitarists were unashamedly not Christian) but merely because their contract was up and they felt the need for a change. They released the CD on punk label SideOneDummy Records in the summer of 2003.
The band was particularly successful in the Christian punk scene in the late 90s and early 2000s and toured alongside their peers, both secular and Christian (most notably bands such as face to face and MxPx, respectively). They also took part in legs of the Vans Warped Tour in 2003.
[edit] Post-2004
Since touring in 2003 and early 2004 in support of Far From Nowhere, Slick Shoes has been very inactive (even their website was taken down). On October 7, 2006, the band issued the following statement on their MySpace page:
- Its been a while since we've had any news to share so it's about time we filled you guys in on what we've been up to lately. The band has been on an indefinite hiatus for the last two years for millions of different reasons...work, school, family, just life in general. Finally though, the gears have begun turning again. Now is a good time to announce that we've begun writing and rehearsing for a new project. Do we have a name yet?...no. Does this mean the end of Slick Shoes?...no. However this is no side project and we're putting everything we've got into it. Right now we have about 20 new songs in the works and they sound great. The lineup will be: Ryan Kepke (vocals), Jonah Peterson (guitar), David Stoltenberg (guitar), Josh Kleven (bass) and John Blanchard (drums). It will be at least a few months until we're ready to start playing shows but check back here for updates. As for the future of Slick Shoes...there are currently no plans to record or play shows anytime in the immediate future. However, we really wouldn't want to rule out any chance of us ever playing a show again here and there or possibly even writing new material if thats what we feel like doing. The future is wide open and most of all we want to thank everybody for all the support! Rock on!
