Sleights railway station

Sleights railway station located in the village of Sleights in North Yorkshire, England. It is located on the Esk Valley Line and is operated by Northern Rail who provide all of the station's passenger services. The station serves the village of Sleights, located behind the station, and the hamlet of Briggswath on the opposite side of the valley across the River Esk.

Sleights station was designed by G.T. Andrews, and used to have two platforms for up and down line working, but in common with most of the stations on the line, this was reduced to single track working in the mid eighties when the second track was lifted. Trains now stop at the former Up line station where the Station Master's house is based - now a private residence.

At one end of the platform a footpath carries passengers over the River Esk to Briggswath on a small box girder bridge, whilst at the other the A169 towers over the railway and river on a bridge opened on the 26th January 1937. The site of the modern day footpath used to be a level crossing carrying the main Whitby-Pickering road, before this was washed away during flooding in 1930. Next to the crossing a 20th century brick built signal box remains, now unused and boarded up.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway has plans to extend its own operations to Whitby, which would involve the construction of a second line, and could return both platforms to use at Sleights in the future.
