Sleeper Either Class
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Sleeper Either Class, often abbreviated to SLE, is a type of railway carriage used by British Rail.
A total of 89 vehicles, numbered 10646-10734, were built at Derby Works from 1981-1982 to the Mark 3A profile. Along with the similar SLEP, they were introduced to replace the ageing fleet of Mark 1 vehicles built to several designs, which dated from the late 1950s and early 1960s.
As of 2006, the only mainline operator of these type of carriages is First ScotRail. They are used in the consist of the Caledonian Sleeper from London Euston to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness and Fort William.
Several carriages have found a new lease of life on heritage railways, where they provide sleeping accommodation for volunteers.
