Slavomacedonian

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term Slavomacedonian is, according to members of the ethnic Macedonian community, a pejorative epithet to describe them, even though it is not intended to be pejorative by those who use it.[citation needed] While reportedly more acceptable in the past to those to which it applies, the Greek Helsinki Monitor notes the "hostility of modern-day Macedonians of Greece (i.e. people with a Macedonian national identity) to accept it".[1]

On the other hand, non-compound forms of the same term such as Slav Macedonian and Macedonian Slav are not considered pejorative.[citation needed]

The term was used by the EBLUL to refer to both the Slavic speaking minority in northern Greece, and the population in the Republic of Macedonia. The term was dropped after complaints from ethnic Macedonian organisations.[2]
