Slaughters, Kentucky

Slaughters is a city in Webster County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 238 at the 2000 census. Pioneer Gustavis Slaughter won the right to name the town in a card game in 1855.[1]

Slaughters is located at 37°29′23″N, 87°30′3″W (37.489849, -87.500946)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 238 people, 93 households, and 70 families residing in the city. The population density was 399.5/km² (1,049.7/mi²). There were 104 housing units at an average density of 174.6/km² (458.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.58% White and 0.42% Asian.

There were 93 households out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.4% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.7% were non-families. 21.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 85.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $40,000, and the median income for a family was $47,917. Males had a median income of $38,125 versus $21,875 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,337. About 7.1% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.4% of those under the age of eighteen and 26.7% of those sixty five or over.
