Slaughterer

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Slaughterers are a fictional species of humanoids derived from The Edge Chronicles, a series of books created by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell.

Slaughterers are red skinned people who live in the Deepwoods. Their red color comes from burning redoak chips. They make and trade leather and breed Hammelhorn, and their relationship with these animals can be compared to that of American Indians and the Buffalo. It seems that most Slaughterer names are derived from butchery terms, with names including "Gristle" and "Tendon". In Beyond The Deepwoods the character Twig saves a Slaughterer from a Hoverworm and so the village let him sleep and eat there. They are nocturnal and take lunch at midnight. Like most Deepwooders, they are superstitious and especially afraid of the Gloamglozer. They are almost entirely ignorant of this dreadful monster, however afraid they may be; they believe that it is a flesh-eater prone to consuming its victims alive, unknowing that it has come among them, disguised as one of their people.
