Slaking (ケッキング Kekkingu?, Kekking in original Japanese language versions) are one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise—a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards, and other media created by Satoshi Tajiri. The purpose of Slaking in the games, anime, and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon—untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments—and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2] It's name is probably a portmanteau of the words 'slack' and 'king'. It may also be a play on 'slacking'.

[edit] Biological characteristics

Slaking, though it evolves out of Sloth Pokémon, is much larger and more muscular than a real sloth, and is anthropomorphicized and more gorilla-like but still has some traits of sloths. Something to notice in both the anime and in the video games is that Slaking's eyes have pupils in the video game sprites. In other pictures, Slaking's pupils are smaller than in the video games. Slaking is noted for having the third highest attack stat out of all Pokemon - and this may explain is laziness: it's so strong it does not put in half of the effort to fight.

[edit] In the video games

Slaking can only be obtained by evolving Vigoroth at level 36, which can be obtained by evolving Slakoth at level 18. Slakoth is a rare Pokémon that is found in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire and Pokémon Emerald, in the wild at Petalburg Woods. Because it is rare, Slaking is relatively hard to obtain.

The protagonist's father and Petalburg City's Gym leader Norman uses a Level 28 Slaking and another one at level 31.

Slaking has incredibly high Attack and Hit Points, as well as high Defense, Special Attack and Speed, with its offensive power rivaling that of legendary Pokémon such as Rayquaza or Groudon. Slaking was previously noted for having the second-highest Attack stat of all Pokémon, surpassed only by Deoxys in Attack Form; with the introduction of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl however, this position has been taken by Rampard. Its Truant ability, however, only allows Slaking to attack every other turn.

Truant works slightly differently in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games; rather than activating every turn, it only activates when Slaking uses a move such as Yawn, or when Slaking uses a Wonder Orb such as a Petrify Orb.

[edit] In the anime

Gym Leader Norman uses a Slaking to battle Ash for his battle of his fifth Hoenn badge. Slaking is his most powerful Pokémon, but Ash was able to defeat it.

In "Slaking Kong," Team Rocket were manipulating a giant Slaking (revealed to be a giant robot disguised as one) to get the local Slaking, Vigoroth, Aipom (including the one who steals Ash's hat), and Mankey to steal berries and May's Ribbon Case. When Team Rocket's plan was exposed, the local Slaking, Vigoroth, Aipom, and Mankey attacked the Slaking robot and brought it down. That episode and it's title were a parody of "King Kong."

Slaking in the Pokémon Trading Card Game

Slaking, for all its power in the video games, has only appeared three times as stage-2 Colorless Pokémon in the Pokémon Trading Card Game:

  • EX Ruby & Sapphire
  • EX Deoxys
  • EX Power Keepers

One strange thing about Slaking is that cards for its pre-evolutions Vigoroth and Slakoth are found in EX Sandstorm, but there is no Slaking to be found there.
