Skyline Pigeon
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Skyline Pigeon" was Elton John's first minor hit in Great Britain. Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics. The song is from the album Empty Sky. It was released in Britain in 1967 when Elton was still Reg Dwight and the pair were living at Elton's mother's house. It was released in the United States in 1975; by that time Elton was at the peak of his career.
The original recording did not include piano played by Elton John but a harpsichord. This was due to the fact that the song was written in the same style as a hymn. Elton John always had the philosophy If in dobt, write a hymn! and with this song he could not get a feel for the genre of which to write it, therefore, he wrote it in the style of a hymn.
