[edit] History

On May 8, 2006, Glenn Kotche said that the band was in the process writing and playing demos for the new record, and that four or five of those songs had made it in to the band's recent live sets. Kotche also said that some of the new songs had been written spontaneously in the studio by the entire band, as opposed to Jeff Tweedy fleshing out the songs on his own and presenting them to the rest of the band.[citation needed] In a June 2006 interview, guitarist Nels Cline revealed that the band would be writing and demoing new songs in August, followed by recording sessions in November.[1] The album's title and release date was announced by Jeff Tweedy on January 17, 2007 at a show in Nashville.[2]

I think people may have an idea in their head about what it will sound like, but it's going to be different than that. Jeff had a lot of creative fire. And also, the way we recorded was so cool because a lot of the arrangements just grew right there with everybody sitting around. I'm over the moon about it. I think it will be a really beautiful record. It's a great time to be in Wilco.

Bassist John Stirratt, in a Billboard interview.

On March 3, 2007, Wilco's official website hosted a Sky Blue Sky "listening party", where they streamed the new album in its entirety.[3] Two days later, the track "What Light" was made available for download on the band's website and its MySpace page. On March 11, 2007, the official website again streamed the album in its entirety.

  • Most of the album's tracks, with the exception of "You Are My Face," "Hate It Here," and "Leave Me (Like You Found Me)" had been available as live bootlegs several months before the record's release. Many fans were surprised by the exclusion of "The Thanks I Get", which had become a concert staple for Jeff Tweedy's live shows. [6][7]

[edit] Personnel

Sky Blue Sky will be the first record to feature all the members of Wilco's touring band as heard on Kicking Television. The newest members, guitarist Nels Cline and multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone, will be making their Wilco studio album debut with Sky Blue Sky, having joined the group after A Ghost Is Born had already been completed.
