Skole

Skole (Ukrainian: Сколе) is a city in Lviv Oblast (province) of Ukraine. Population is 6,742 (2001).

The first official date about Skole is the year 1397. The very imported way from Kyiv to Hungary lie through the Skole; that was a reason of frequent assault for it. When the teritory of Skole region was unde Polish state the polish king distribute the land between Polish gentry. German colonists particularly craftspeople who settled in Skole region promote the development of it economy. Great influence for the economy and cultural development of the region had the family of baron Gredel. In Skole was used the coin of baron Gredel. They stamped at mint of Vien (was in use until 1930. Modern Skole is the small town, center of Skole distrikt with auspicious conditions to tuorism business.

The area of the Skole district is 1474 squar кm. The popolation is 50188 persons. The district consist of 57 villages. There are many famose places in Skole region. Grebeniv for example is the village that in the past had the renown as sanitarium where treat Metropolit Sheptytskyy and prime minister Cherchel. Verchne Synevydne the first remembrance in annals of Galych-Volyn' (1240). The history is concerned with person of Danylo Galytskyy

Near 25 million years ago in neogen period of kainozoi era was formatted as Karpatien mountains as sandstone, some of them emerge on the surface of earth. In the geologic science they are known as “Iamnentski” (the name resemble from village Iamna). The complex consist of Kamin’ (Stone), Ostryy Kamin’ (Sharp Stone), Mala Skelia (Small Rocke), Zholob (Gutter). In some place sandstone go beyond as monolith form, in another – as chaotic rocks. There are many cracks, burdens, cave; something was created by man. Sandstone was changed there origin form in denaturation process, making up the exotic form (“Chotyry Veletni” (Four Giants), “Try Pal’tsi” (Three Fingers), “Chotyry Spysy” (Four Lances), “Orel” (Eagle)); there are many legends and myths about there. In 3.000 b.C. on these rocks was functioned the sanctuary. The sciences discovered 270 petroglifs. In IX-XIII century on these rocks was the strong fortress Tustan’. Was discovered 4.000 grooves and glades. On the base of this discovers is reconstructed the graphic form of the fortress. Sandstone in Urych is the natural object, it have science, recreation, esthetic, historic and cultural value. In a present time these sandstone is a state history-cultural reserve “Tustan’” and is visited every year more of 3.000 people.
