Skarżysko County (Polish: powiat skarżyski) is a powiat (county) located about 30 km north-east of Kielce, in northern Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. It borders Szydłowiec County (Masovian Voivodeship) to the north, Starachowice County to the west, Kielce County to the south and Końskie County to the west. The county seat is the town of Skarżysko-Kamienna. The population numbers 80,606 (2005). With an area of 394.81 km², Skarżysko County is the smallest among the voivodeship's thirteen land counties.

  • Skarżysko-Kamienna - urban commune
  • Gmina of Suchedniów - urban-rural commune
  • Gmina of Bliżyn - rural commune
  • Gmina of Łączna - rural commune
  • Gmina of Skarżysko Kościelne - rural commune

[edit] Territorial changes

As of 2006, Skarżysko County has undergone three territorial changes since its creation in 1999 - several villages from adjoining powiats have been incorporated:

  • 2000 - Pogorzałe and Książece from Szydłowiec County, until then separate villages, became districts of Skarżysko-Kamienna.
  • 2001 - Majków and Michałów from Starachowice County became a part of Skarżysko Kościelne Commune.
  • 2004 - Kierz Niedźwiedzi seceded from Szydłowiec County and was incorporated into Skarżysko Kościelne Commune.
