The following is a list of major and minor characters from the Square-Enix role-playing video game Final Fantasy X. Many of these characters reprise their roles in the game's sequel Final Fantasy X-2.

The main playable characters in Final Fantasy X are Tidus, Yuna, Kimahri Ronso, Wakka, Lulu, Auron and Rikku. With two exceptions (Maesters Yo Mika and Wen Kinoc), human characters in the game do not have surnames, although members of other races use their race's name for this purpose (example: Seymour Guado). Unlike other recent games in the series, there are no optional or secret playable characters.

Several non-playable characters (or "NPCs") important to the story are the parents of the main protagonists, such as Jecht (Tidus' father), Braska (Yuna's father) and Cid (Rikku's father). The primary antagonists of the game are Seymour Guado and the other maesters of the Yevon religion, while the malevolent creature known as "Sin" serves as the primary source of conflict. In addition, there is a vast supporting cast of named characters. Most of these characters feature voice talents complementing the principal roles.

All characters in the game belong to one of the five sentient races seen in the game's world of Spira: Ronso, Hypello, Guado, Al Bhed and ordinary humans. After death and under certain conditions, the people of all five races can become disembodied spirits that remain bound to the living world while preserving their appearances and personalities (called "unsent") or monsters filled with enmity for the living that prey upon them (called "fiends"). They can all also become fayth if they should offer up their souls to one who can imbue their spirit into a statue. Tidus and Yuna talk with several fayth during the game and discover some of the characters they have been interacting with are unsent.

Tidus (ティーダ, Tīda^?) is the hero and a skilled blitzball player who plays for the Zanarkand Abes — whom his father also played for — who washes up on the Spiran mainland, thanks to Sin, and quickly becomes one of Yuna's guardians. He is described near the end of the game as the greatest guardian of all time. Tidus is usually a cheerful and confident person, and is able to maintain his upbeat nature in large part because of his unfamiliarity with the truth surrounding Yuna's journey: that in order to achieve her goal of defeating Sin, she must die.^[3] When he learns the truth, he is deeply infuriated and becomes determined to find an alternative path to defeat Sin to protect the woman he has fallen in love with. Throughout the story, Tidus is shown to harbor deep resentment toward his father, Jecht, and it is revealed that their relationship with one another was not very close.^[4][5][6] In battle, his weapon of choice is the Brotherhood, a blue-bladed sword given to him by Wakka that once belonged to his brother, Chappu. All his weapons fit into the longsword category, and his first sword, given to him by Auron, actually belonged to Jecht, originally. His particular specialty in battle is in striking agile foes, and his Overdrive attacks involve barrages of sword strikes. It is eventually revealed that the Zanarkand he comes from is not the original, but, rather, a summoned replica dreamed up by the fayth and summoned by Yu Yevon.^[7][8] After destroying Yu Yevon in the game's finale, the fayth are allowed to stop dreaming and Tidus fades out of existence. The game's final scene, however, reveals Tidus waking up within a body of water, stretching and then swimming upward with a smile on his face. It is later revealed in Final Fantasy X-2 that this is because the fayth of Bahamut (seen throughout the FFX game by Tidus) offers to bring Tidus back as a reward for Yuna for saving Spira again. Tidus is brought back in Final Fantasy X-2 in the ocean near the island of Besaid. It is the start of this scene that is shown at the end of Final Fantasy X. This is one of the many endings for FFX-2. Commonly known as the good ending.

Auron (アーロン, Āron^?) is an enigmatic and powerful warrior, attacking with various blades that fit into the Katana category. Auron's quiet, mysterious and dangerous nature helped make him very popular with fans, and his Bushido Overdrives use arcade-style button inputs to increase damage. Shortly after the disappearance of Tidus' father, Auron became something of a mentor for Tidus, watching over him from afar. In the game's present day, he — along with Tidus — becomes Yuna's guardian, as he was to her father. It is eventually revealed during the game that Auron attacked Yunalesca in a fit of rage after she revealed that Braska and Jecht needlessly gave their lives against Sin, and that she struck him down with a mortal wound that soon led to his death.^[9] Afterward, he became an unsent, and secretly held this status for nearly the entire duration of the game (but this is why Auron would not enter the farplane at Guadosalam in FFX as he may not have been able to physically leave after entering), the exception being shortly after the defeat of Yu Yevon- he is sent, as he had desired to be once his quest was over. Auron was also once a warrior monk for Bevelle, but in FFX holds no connection to the teachings of Yevon during FFX. Auron also makes a brief appearance in FFX-2, as his voice helps Yuna during her battle with Vegnagun in the farplane.(img)

Rikku (リュック, Ryukku^?) helps Tidus when he first arrives in Spira, but then disappears from the story for a while, becoming the last character to join Yuna's entourage of guardians. Rikku's character class is most similar to that of the Thief from earlier Final Fantasy titles combined with the Chemist class. Rikku's ability to steal, use a subset of items that no one else can, and — as her Overdrive — combine two of any item for greater effect grants a range of versatility to her playable use in the party. She can steal a large variety of items from fiends and bosses alike, many of which can only be acquired through theft. These items can be sold, used on the party or enemy (depending on the effect of each item) or spent to customize weapons and armor. The ability to customize becomes unlocked only after Rikku permanently joins the party. Rikku has a fear of lightning, this due to an accident involving her brother (Brother) who was attempting to rescue her from a fiend, but struck her with the Thunder spell meant for the creature (though by Final Fantasy X-2, she had managed to break her fear). Her attitude is somewhat childish, but is also quite cheerful and positive. An Al Bhed, she is also Yuna's cousin and loves her dearly^[10], and, as such, wishes to prevent her from going through with her pilgrimage, becoming particularly insistent as the party climbs Mt. Gazaget toward Zanarkand. She is also the one who informs Tidus that Yuna would die if she summoned her Final Aeon. In battle, Rikku uses a variety of claw-like weapons. Wakka (ワッカ, Wakka^?) is a blitzball player from Besaid Island who retires soon after he meets Tidus after he washes ashore early in Final Fantasy X and quickly becomes close friends with him. Wakka is fiercely loyal to the Yevon religion, and introduces Tidus to the teachings of the Yevonites. He is very distrustful of the Al Bhed, and has some difficulty adjusting to the knowledge that Rikku herself is one of them.^[11][12] His brother, Chappu left the Brotherhood sword Wakka gave him in favor of an Al Bhed machina weapon. He believes this is the reason his brother was killed by Sin during a mission with the Crusaders that Chappu was involved in. His anger was only worsened by the knowledge that Chappu had intended to marry Lulu once he returned from the ill-fated mission. Wakka treats Yuna like a younger sister, and is very protective of her. He is also affectionate and loyal to Lulu, whom he and Yuna grew up with. All of his weapons are forms of blitzball; because of this, he can effectively strike enemies at long range, and he specializes in dispatching flying enemies because his high accuracy cancels out their normally high evasion. His weapons tend to have built-in status affects like darkness, silence, and poison, and his special attacks revolve around inflicting status effects on his enemies.

Yuna (ユウナ, Yūna^?) is the heroine and summoner (召喚士, Shōkanshi^?), a vocation held in high regard by the people of Spira. Final Fantasy X's relaxed class system allows her to fit the traditional Cleric/White Mage role in the party, while also allowing her to summon powerful magical entities called "aeons." Already known throughout Spira as the daughter of High Summoner Braska — the man who, ten years earlier, brought a brief respite from Sin's destruction (The Calm) — Yuna has chosen to embark upon the summoner's pilgrimage to become a High Summoner herself. The burden of this responsibility is expected to see Yuna journey to temples across Spira, acquire the aeon from each and ultimately summon the Final Aeon in a battle that will claim both its life and hers. Her weapons are a variety of staves, and she is able to summon a total of eight aeons during the game (technically ten, because while the Magus Sisters act as one summon, they are three separate entities). As Yuna's story progresses she gradually becomes more open and falls in love with Tidus. In FFX-2 it is her intention to try and find a way to be re-united with her lost love, whom is lost at the end of Final Fantasy X, as a result of the defeating of Yu-Yevon and Sin.

Yuna's mother was an Al Bhed, so one of her eyes is green and the other blue, a reflection of her mixed heritage.

Lulu (ルールー, Rūrū^?) is another of Yuna's guardians, and is consistently concerned over Yuna's feelings. She is a gloomy and blunt person, but is very kind-hearted. Lulu is a Black Mage and uses a variety of dolls as weapons, which sometimes are endowed with status effects such as zombie or death. Her physical attacks are extremely weak, but she more than makes up for it with her black magic spells. In the beginning of the game, she possesses the most basic forms of elemental magic, but later on she learns powerful non-elemental spells like Flare, Demi, and Death. She is initially very skeptical of Tidus' participation in Yuna's quest, but ultimately accepts his presence and comes to respect him, even to the extent of calling him the greatest guardian ever. Her Overdrive, Fury, allows the player to cast multiple spells at no Magic Point (MP) cost by quickly rotating the right analog stick. Prior to his death, Lulu had been romantically involved with Chappu, Wakka's younger brother, and his death wounded her deeply.

Kimahri (キマリ＝ロンゾ, Kimari-Ronzo^?) is Yuna's first and most faithful guardian. He has known and protected her since she was a child of just seven years of age. However, he was not well accepted by the other Ronso, who view him as inferior due to his shorter stature and broken horn. Kimahri doesn't speak much, and is extremely protective of Yuna. In Kimahri's fighting class, one can see echoes of the Dragon Knights of older Final Fantasy games (due to his choice of weaponry and his Jump attack, although his Jump attack hits instantly with only a slight increase in damage, unlike most other Jumps) and of the Blue Mage character class, as well (the Lancet ability allows him to learn enemy attacks). Kimahri's Spirit Lance is his ultimate weapon, and it can be noted that spear or lance weapons have been a staple of the dragoon class for some time. Kimahri is the only character lacking a pre-determined course on the Sphere Grid, allowing the player freedom to choose Kimahri's abilities from the time of his initial stat growth. Kimahri's Overdrive is unique in the way that he must learn his skills from fiends or bosses using his Lancet ability on them. Moves can acquired from certain enemies; Seed Cannon can be learned from Sandagora , whereas Nova can only be learned from either Omega Weapon or later in the game can be learned from Nemesis in the Monster Arena (img)

Aeons are manifestations of the fayth, the spirits whom a summoner visits to gain a blessing and aid. There are a total of ten aeons in Final Fantasy X, though the Magus Sisters act together as a single unit. Of these, Anima, Yojimbo and the Magus Sisters are not necessarily acquired in a normal game, but the player can gain them through side-quests. Final Fantasy X marked the first time in the Final Fantasy series that players were able to control summons when they were called into battle.

Valefor (ヴァルファーレ, Varufāre^?) is a flying, winged creature, obtained in Besaid Temple, whose fayth is of a young girl. The name "Valefor" is also used for one of the Dukes of Hell, the sixth demon of the Goetia. This aerial aeon easily dodges many attacks from the ground. Valefor's regular attack is a quick, snatching motion, which is enhanced by the aeon's high accuracy. During Final Fantasy X-2, Valefor was tainted by Shuyin and was fought in the antechamber of her fayth.

• Special attack: Sonic Wings — A sweep of Valefor's wings will temporarily stun an enemy and delay their turn. Valefor's unique attack sends a shockwave at one enemy, inflicting damage and delaying the enemy's next turn. Because of the delay effect and short recovery time, you can often hit enemies repeatedly with Sonic Wings.
• Overdrive: Energy Ray (シューティング・レイ, Shūtingu Rei^?, Shooting Ray in the Japanese language version) and Energy Blast (シューティング・パワー, Shūtingu Pawā^?, Shooting Power in the Japanese language version) (Note that Valefor is the only aeon with a second, secret Overdrive, as obtained in Besaid.) Both attacks inflict large non-elemental damage on all targets. However, Energy Blast is stronger and needs more recovery time.
• Break Damage Limit: Valefor gains the ability to deal over 9999 damage when Yuna is in possession of her Celestial Weapon, Nirvana.

Ifrit (イフリート, Ifurīto^?) is an aeon who uses mainly Fire-based attacks; obtained in Kilika Temple, whose Fayth is of a young man. The name "Ifrit" is also used for the Arab Jinn of fire Ifrit, which is mentioned in the Qur'an, among other places. Although Ifrit has incredibly high strength and the highest defense of the standard aeons, its magic and magic defense are quite low. Ifrit can regain HP by casting Fire, Fira, or Firaga on itself. It's best to use Ifrit against enemies that are weak against Fire. This is because the elemental aeons of Ifrit, Ixion and Shiva can use their own elemental magic to cure themselves, and so fiends which use the corresponding spells heal the aeons, similarly to a cure spell. During Final Fantasy X-2, Ifrit was tainted by Shuyin and caused the flames of his temple to glow blue while he attempted to send Fiends out into Kilika. He was quickly felled in the antechamber of his fayth.

• Special attack: Meteor strike — Ifrit conjures a small meteor to hit an enemy. Meteor Strike is a non-elemental attack that is hurled at one enemy, but has a longer recovery time than its regular attack. This is a useful long-range attack. It also penetrates Protect despite being a physical attack.
• Overdrive: Hellfire (地獄の火炎, Jigoku no Honō^?) — Ifrit creates a vortex of fire and strikes the opponent for Fire-based damage. Ifrit encases its foes in a swirling ball of fiery vengeance and detonates it for massive damage to all enemies.
• Break Damage Limit: Ifrit gains the ability to deal over 9999 damage when Wakka is in possession of his Celestial Weapon, the World Champion.

Ixion (イクシオン, Ikushion^?) is a unicorn who uses Thunder-based attacks; obtained after the trials in Djose Temple. His fayth is man in mariner attire. The name Ixion is also used for a Greek mythological figure, the mortal Ixion who fathered the centaur race. Ixion's high defense and magic defense attributes make it a good aeon to summon when the party needs protection from an attack. Ixion can regain HP by casting Thunder, Thundara, or Thundaga on itself. Ixion is best used against enemies that are weak against Thunder (or enemies that use Thunder attacks), or in places where a lot of self-healing might be necessary. During Final Fantasy X-2, Ixion was tainted by Shuyin and used Fiends to kill off the Machine Faction within Djose Temple. At first the Machine Faction had the upperhand, but Ixion absorbed the machines fighting it to created a new body for itself. Though defeated in his antechamber, Ixion's mechanical remains attempted a self-destruct sequence, with the backlash knocking Yuna into the hole where his fayth used to be.

• Special attack: Aerospark — A blast of lightning that damages an enemy and negates all supportive magical spells currently in effect for them. Ixion fires spinning, blades of lightning that converge on a single enemy and cause non-elemental damage. The attack also negates magical effects like protect, shell, reflect, haste, regen, and nul spells.
• Overdrive: Thor's Hammer (トールハンマー, Tōru Hanmā^?) — Ixion envelops all enemies in a storming vortex, and then disintegrates it. Lightning-based elemental damage is inflicted against all enemies.
• Break Damage Limit: Ixion gains the ability to deal over 9999 damage when Kimahri is in possession of his Celestial Weapon, Spirit Lance.

Shiva (シヴァ, Shiva^?) is a humanoid female that uses Ice-based attacks; obtained in Macalania Temple, her Fayth is a Priestess of that region. Her very presence in the Temple allow Malacania to maintain its frigid environment which soon was devastated when she departed after Sin's defeat. The name "Shiva" is also used for the Hindu god Shiva, but the game's figure of the same name lacks all of the god's defining attributes except blue skin. The queen of ice is a gorgeous sight to behold and an agile attacker. She can be healed by casting Blizzard, Blizzara, or Blizzaga on herself. During Final Fantasy X-2, Shiva was tainted by Shuyin and sicked the Fiends on the Macalanian shop. By the time Yuna and company begin their journey to the Farplane, Shiva challenged them and was defeated.

• Special attack: Heavenly strike — Shiva creates a giant block of ice and drops it on an enemy. The attack slightly delays the targets next turn in addition to inflicting non-elemental damage and the status ailment threaten.
• Overdrive: Diamond Dust (ダイアモンドダスト, Daimondo Dasuto^?) — Shiva freezes all enemies in layers of ice, and then destroys everything with a leisurely snap of her fingers.
• Break Damage Limit: Shiva gains the ability to deal over 9999 damage when Lulu is in possession of her Celestial Weapon, Onion Knight.

Bahamut (バハムート, Bahamūto^?) is the King of Dragons and the most powerful standard aeon; he is obtained in Bevelle. Its fayth is a young boy who appears throughout the game as the fayth collective's chosen representative. It is he who asks Tidus to defeat Yu Yevon and allow the dreaming of the fayth to end.^[13] Bahamut is obtained after the trials in the temple of Bevelle. The name "Bahamut" originates from Arab myths, the name depicting a legendary fish-creature. During Final Fantasy X-2, Bahamut was tainted by Shuyin and was the first to fight YRP. After the rest of its companions were defeated, Bahamut's fayth appeared to apologize for their actions.

• Special attack: Impulse — Four masses of dark energy are conjured by Bahamut, hitting multiple enemies for non-elemental damage.
• Overdrive: Mega Flare (メガフレア, Megafurea^?) — Bahamut anchors himself into the ground and begins charging energy. He then releases baleflame and causes a seismic eruption that deals massive damage.
• Break Damage Limit: Bahamut has the ability to deal over 9999 damage as soon as he is obtained.

Anima (アニマ, Anima^?) is a very powerful hidden aeon first seen in an FMV and in a boss battle against Seymour, later made available to the party after the player completes an optional sidequest. Without the stat modifications available once the Aeon's Soul item is obtained, Anima has the highest base stats. Her 'physical' and unique attacks can do up to 99,999 damage at the outset, and the Aeon's defense is extremely high. For these reasons, many people consider Anima to be the strongest aeon, and well worth the work necessary to obtain her. Anima's fayth is the tortured soul of Seymour's mother, located in Baaj Temple. In order to receive Anima, the player must collect the hidden treasures from all the previously visited temples, thus unlocking the Chamber of the Fayth in the Baaj Temple. Upon reaching the Chamber, Seymour's mother explains that when Seymour was young, they fled to Baaj Temple to avoid persecution, brought on by Seymour's mixed Guado-human heritage. His mother, then terminally ill, hoped that by becoming a summoner, the people of Spira would accept Seymour, and thus she became a fayth for him to call on. However, Seymour's endeavors became genocidal, and his mother asked that Yuna and company stop him, using her power if necessary. The name Anima is Latin for "soul". In the psychology of Jung, the anima is the powerful feminine "inner self" which represents a person's deepest driving thoughts. The aeon's likeness does seem to draw on Jung's archetype for anima, though, or even older archetypes such as the maiden, mother, and crone Triad. During Final Fantasy X-2, Anima was tainted by Shuyin and was the last Aeon to be fought.

• Special Attack: Pain — Anima conjures a non-elemental blast of tormented energy and inflicts it on an opponent, causing powerful damage or inflicting instant death.
• Overdrive: Oblivion (カオティック・D, Kaotikku Dī^?, Chaotic D in the Japanese langage version) — Anima draws the opponent underneath the battlefield into a realm of psychological and spiritual torment and her lower(more powerful, and frightening-looking) half breaks free of its restraints, unleashing a deadly non-elemental attack on the opponent by physically striking them 16 times and then unleashing a powerful magic burst. (In the PAL version, Anima gives 16 strikes that can do 99999 damage each, giving a grand total of 1599984 damage. However, enemies with very high defense are unlikely to receive this much damage.)
• Break Damage Limit: Anima has the ability to deal over 9999 damage as soon as it is obtained.

Yojimbo (ようじんぼう, Yōjinbō^?, lit. "Bodyguard") is another hidden aeon. As such, the player must hire Yojimbo first and then pay him whenever he is to attack. At some point in Final Fantasy X's pre-history, the fayth of Yojimbo was stolen from its original temple and hidden in the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth, presumably so that summoners would be unable to complete their pilgrimages and, thus, be spared their lives.^[14] To obtain Yojimbo, the player must confront the unsent spirit of Lady Ginnem — the first summoner Lulu served as guardian to — within the cave, and then fight and defeat Yojimbo after she summons him. Afterward, the player may access Yojimbo's fayth, a mercenany, and hire him. The cost of hiring him can be reduced by bartering. What attack he performs during battle is based on several factors, most notably how much gil he is paid for the attack and his current compatibility with Yuna. The name Yojimbo was also seen in a very popular manga, film and television series in Japan about a Ronin that worked as a bodyguard and had his toddler son Daigoro with him. (See Lone Wolf and Cub and for more information.) The aeon's Daigoro, though, is a canine companion who became a Shisa to serve alongside its master. Akira Kurosawa's famous movie Yojimbo — about a ronin bodyguard who saves a town — is reputed to have inspired Auron's character design. During Final Fantasy X-2, Yojimbo was tainted by Shuyin and was fought in the chamber of his fayth.

Yojimbo has four attacks:

• Daigoro — On Yojimbo's command, Daigoro will attack.
• Kozuka — Yojimbo will throw kunai at a single enemy..
• Wakizashi — Yojimbo draws the sword on his belt and slices one or all enemies present.
• Zanmato (斬魔刀, Zanmatō^?, lit. "Demon Splitting Sword") — Yojimbo summons a long sword and instantly kills the opponent(s) with a single slash; this includes bosses.

• Overdrive: Increased chance of using Zanmato.
• Break Damage Limit: Yojimbo gains the ability to deal over 9999 damage when Auron is in possession of his Celestial Weapon, Masamune.

The Magus Sisters are three extremely powerful humanoid female aeons summoned as one. Each one acts as an individual but also as one. They consist of Sandy, Mindy and Cindy. In the Japanese language version, the sisters are known as Mog, Dog and Rag. Together they are considered the most powerful Aeons, and are the only aeons able to cast 'auto-life' spell. To obtain the Magus sisters, the player must already have both Anima and Yojimbo, the Flower Sceptre Key Item (obtained by defeating Belgemine's version of Bahamut) and the Blossom Crown Key Item (obtained by capturing monsters for the monster arena). The player must also defeat all of Belgemine's aeons, including Yojimbo and Anima, and they will then be able to access the Magus Sisters' fayth. The player's control over the three is somewhat limited, with commands in battle being limited to "Fight", "Do as you will", "Help each other", "One more time" and "Go, go, go", though they often do as they please. Allowing each aeon to 'do as they please' usually results in each casting a spell to protect one another, or using the already cast spells to attack the enemy (example: Sandy will cast Reflect on Cindy, and on Mindy's next turn, she will cast an elemental black magic spell on Cindy, thus causing the enemy to be damaged). Sometime when given this option they will choose to 'take a break' and do nothing with their turn. They originally appeared as bosses in Final Fantasy IV. During Final Fantasy X-2, the Sisters were tainted by Shuyin and were fought in the Farplane.

• Special Attacks:

• Mindy's Passado — Mindy fires fifteen stingers at an enemy. If Mindy's strength is high enough, this ability can be as powerful as Anima's overdrive, dealing up to 149985 damage, making her the highest damage dealer of the Sisters.
• Sandy's Razzia — Sandy launches two blades of fire from her wrists
• Cindy's Camisade — Cindy jumps into the air and bodyslams an enemy

• Overdrive: Delta Attack (デルタアタック, Deruta Atakku^?) — Cindy draws all enemies into a magic void before helping her sisters trap them in a crystal stasis. Sandy then draws power from the enemies and lends it to her sisters to use. The sisters then break the stasis in a large magic blast, causing massive explosions centered on the enemies.
• Break Damage Limit: The Magus Sisters have the ability to deal over 9999 damage as soon as they are obtained.

The International/PAL version of Final Fantasy X also features Dark Aeons as enemies in a side-quest. They are found at various locations, such as Besaid island (Dark Valefor) and the Thunder Plains (Dark Ixion). If the player manages to defeat all the Dark Aeons, the superboss Penance will become accessible in the Calm Lands.

Tidus' Celestial weapon (Caladbolg) does not have any effect on aeon's strength, nor does Rikku's Godhand Celestial weapon.

Cid (シド, Shido^?) is the leader of the Al Bhed, Rikku's father and Yuna's maternal uncle. He was the man responsible for bringing the Al Bhed together after being scattered by Yevon years ago, but Home was devastated during a Guado attack to kidnap Yuna, and eventually destroyed. He was the one who started the plan to abduct summoners after Braska's death during the Final Summoning. He is particularly insistent that Yuna not sacrifice herself to bring about the Calm. The group used his airship, the Fahrenheit, to fight Sin. After the events of FFX, at the start of the Eternal Calm, Cid was one of the few to receive a negative impact from Sin's demise. Though Cid intended to build a new Home, most of the Al Bhed parted ways to set their sights on the changing Spira much to his dismay.

Jecht (ジェクト, Jekuto^?) is the father of Tidus and Dream Zanarkand's star player. Ten years prior to Tidus, he was carried to Spira by Sin, where he became Lord Braska's guardian. He sacrificed himself to become the fayth for Lord Braska's Final Summoning, and — as a result — is the new Sin. Tidus resents his father for his criticisms, having taken them at face value, unaware that Jecht loved him with all his heart and was trying to express that as best he was able in the hopes that he would make Tidus strong.^[15][16] Jecht travels to Dream Zanarkand at the beginning of the events of Final Fantasy X to bring Tidus and Auron to the Spiran mainland in the hopes that Tidus will get to understand the harsh realities of real life and become a strong person, and that he will be able to help kill him and end the terror of Sin once and for all. He departs for the Farplane after being confronted by Yuna and her guardians within Sin, and defeated in battle.

Seymour Guado (シーモア＝グアド, Shīmoa-Guado^?) is the son of the late Jyscal Guado, born to a Guado father and a human mother. Seymour's supposed benevolence is exposed for its true nature later in the game, as Seymour is portrayed as an increasingly twisted character with a dark and tragic past. He intends to become the next Sin by being the fayth for Yuna's Final Aeon and, thereby, bring complete destruction to Spira; he believes that by killing everyone, he will be freeing them from their lives, which he views as a prison of suffering.^[17] Interestingly, Seymour's mother similarly sacrificed herself to become the fayth for the Aeon Anima. Seymour can be controlled by the player for a single battle during Operation Mi'ihen. It is even possible to charge up Seymour's Overdrive gauge and unleash his own Overdrive attack, Requiem. Requiem returns in Final Fantasy X-2 as Cry in the Night, the hardest Blue Bullet ability to obtain, obtained from the Master Tonberry.

[edit] Yu Yevon

Some 1,000 years before the events of Final Fantasy X, Yu Yevon (エボン＝ジュ, Ebon-Ju^?) was a peerless summoner, the ruler of Zanarkand and the father of Lady Yunalesca. He is responsible for much of Spira's current tragic circumstances, first taking the lives of his own people to create "Dream Zanarkand," and then drawing on millions of pyreflies with Gravity spells to create Sin.^[18][19] Yu Yevon rebirths Sin by possessing the Final Aeon used to defeat it. This is how Tidus's father, Jecht, becomes Sin. The survivors of the events surrounding Sin's genesis adopted the Teachings of Yevon and built a religion around praising Yevon in the hopes that they may quell his wrath.

In the end, Yuna and her guardians utilize her aeons to weaken the disembodied spirit of Yu Yevon and make him vulnerable to physical attacks, allowing them to destroy him and bring a permanent end to Sin and the spiral of death that had consumed Spira for 1,000 years.

Yu Yevon is Final Fantasy X's final boss. Due to the fact that all of the players' characters have permanent Auto-Life casted on them (if they die, they're automatically revived), it is extremely difficult to lose (the only known way is equip a character with a stonestrike weapon and attack each member of the party, shattering the character and therefore making it impossible to revive them; Kimahri may also use his Self-Destruct overdrive, removing himself from battle while damaging the enemy).

Sin (シン, Shin^?) is a giant whale-like fiend that has terrorized Spira for a thousand years. It is the summoner's task to destroy Sin with the Final Aeon, killing him/herself while Spira can enjoy the resulting Calm until Sin is reborn. However, the Final Aeon used to killed Sin is quickly possessed by Yu Yevon and refashioned into a new Sin. The first Sin born that way was Zaon and last is Jecht. In the course of the game Jecht attempted to fight back his urges as Sin and transform into a huge Sin with his sword, using the Hymn of the Fayth as a calming mechanism. However, by the time Tidus and company arrived, Jecht had become less able to hear it. Fortunately, Jecht was killed, thus being freed of Yu Yevon. Once Yu Yevon was destroyed, Sin quickly followed. The final death of Sin marked the beginning of the Eternal Calm.

Belgemine (ベルゲミーネ, Berugemīne^?) is an older and more experienced summoner and assists Yuna throughout the course of her pilgrimage by challenging her to numerous aeon duels as well as by offering advice. These duels serve to train the player in how best to fight with the newly acquired aeons. Typically the player will be ill-equipped to actually defeat Belgemine, but she will provide key items to Yuna even if she is not defeated. However, defeating Belgemine is beneficial because Yuna will not only receive the key item, but also another reward, typically a large amount of rare items with various effects. It is eventually revealed that Belgemine is an unsent who perished when she failed to defeat Sin.^[20] (img). Following this revelation, depending on the player's actions, Yuna sends Belgemine to the Farplane.

The Besaid Aurochs are the official Blitzball team of the village of Besaid composed of Jassu, Datto, Botta, Letty, & Keepa. Captained by Wakka, this woefully inept team suffered from a ten-year losing streak prior to meeting Tidus, with their motto being "Do our Best!".^[21] But after the incident at Luca, depending on the win/lose endings, the Aurochs perfected their skills during the Eternal Calm along with joining the Youth League. But prior to the Blitzball season resuming, the Aurochs were being trained by Beclem. In FFX, the player could change Auroch lineup over the course of the game at the player's discretion.(img)

Braska was originally a Yevonite priest who believed there should be peace between the Al Bhed and the rest of Spira. During a visit to the Al Bhed's base, Home, on Bikanel Island, Braska met Cid's sister, and, after a short period, the two of them ran off together and were soon wed—much to the displeasure of Cid and the Yevon clergy, both Braska and Cid's sister falling out of favor with their respective groups.

A year later, Yuna was born, and four years after that, Braska's wife set out on a trip to Bikanel in the hopes of making peace with Cid.^[25] However, Sin attacked her ship and she was killed. Shortly after this, Braska chose to become a summoner in the hopes that he could destroy Sin and prevent anyone else from suffering as he had.

With his loyal friends and guardians, Auron and Jecht, Braska eventually undertook a pilgrimage to conquer Sin. When he arrived at the small island of Besaid, he decided that it was the place where he wanted Yuna to grow up after he died, and asked Auron to take her there once his pilgrimage was complete, so that she may grow up peacefully.^[26] Giving his life for the cause he believed in, Braska was able to bring the Calm to Spira for the first time in 200 years.^[27]

Brother (アニキ, Aniki^?) is the son of Cid and older brother of Rikku. Brother participated in the Al Bhed expedition to salvage an airship from the ocean floor, where he meets Tidus. Brother makes another appearance later on near Macalania as he attempts to kidnap Yuna to prevent her from completing her pilgrimage, sending a machina after her and her guardians. Eventually, he goes on to support Yuna's struggle against Sin and Yu Yevon as the pilot of the airship Fahrenheit that he salvaged. Brother is also an avid blitzball player, and can be recruited to play for the Besaid Aurochs - arguably he is the best Blitzball player available for hire as all of his statistics vary between average and excellent. He is noted for being one of the fastest swimmers in Spira. Brother has some magical abilities; he casts a Thunder spell to save Rikku from a fiend, but hits her instead, causing her to fear lightning. Two years later, during Final Fantasy X-2, Brother became the pilot of his own Airship, the Celsius, and is leader of the Gullwing Sphere Hunters. He had feelings for Yuna, but he loved Yuna as he first met her rather than the Yuna who joined his Sphere Hunting group. Some fans criticized this relationship due to Yuna and Brother being cousins. Rikku discourages Brother's pursuit of Yuna in-game on more than one occasion. (img)

Calli (ヒクリ, Hikuri^?, Hikuri in the Japanese language version) is a young girl on the Mi'ihen Highroad who asks Yuna when will she bring another Calm.^[28] She also appears in a larger role in Final Fantasy X-2, fully grown and looking for Chocobos to ride. If the player chooses to, the Gullwings will assist in a chocobo hunt along the Highroad and catch one for Calli to keep as a pet. If the right options are selected, Calli and her chocobo will come aboard the Celsius and stay in the airship's cabin where, later in the game, Calli tells Yuna she likes Brother (noting that his Mohawk makes him look like a chocobo).

Chappu (チャップ, Chappu^?) is Wakka's younger brother whom Wakka looked after as a father figure. Chappu was also Lulu's first love, and according to Wakka, he would have proposed to her if the Aurochs ever won the Cup. However, Luzzu approached him and convinced him to join the Crusaders; Chappu did so believing that while being with Lulu was good, it would be better to protect her from Sin. Wakka attempted to give Chappu the Brotherhood sword, but Chappu left it behind while recording a sphere he intended to give Wakka, which ended up with him almost missing his boat and not having enough time to pray. Months later, Chappu died battling Sin on Djose a year before the events of Final Fantasy X.^[29] His death turns Wakka towards the path of becoming a guardian. Since Chappu used an Al Bhed weapon to fight Sin, Wakka developed a sense of hatred toward them, blaming them for his brother's death.^[30] However, he sometimes refuses to admit that his brother's death using a machina weapon has anything to do with why he hates machina. Two years later, during the Eternal Calm, Wakka received the sphere Chappu recorded years ago from Beclem, a former Crusader Chappu befriended after leaving Besaid. As the sphere revealed, Chappu never wanted Wakka for a father, only as his big brother (img)

Lucil (ルチル, Ruchiru^?) is Captain of the Djose Chocobo Knights mounted forces. Along with Elma (エルマ, Eruma^?) (her second in command) and Clasko (クラスコ, Kurasuko^?) (the somewhat clumsy member), they were first seen guarding the Mi'hen Highroad, due to reports of the Chocobo Eater sited in the area. They also participate in Operation Mi'ihen, being one of the few survivors of the subsequent massacre of the Crusaders by Sin, unfortunately for the Chocobo Knights, most of them were literally obliterated by Sin's attack while they took on the Sinscales. For the rest of the game, they cared for the sole Chocobo that also survived. During the Eternal Calm, Lucil and Elma joined the Youth League as key members while Clasko eventually left to fulfill his dream to be a "Chocobo Breeder" (img)

Summoner Dona (ドナ, Dona^?) is Yuna's rival, mocking her for having a large group of guardians while remarking that Lord Braska only needed two.^[31] Barthello (バルテロ, Barutero^?) is Dona's sole guardian, though his feelings for her tend to be a romantic level. He chose to be a guardian as the result of being a long-time admirer of Auron.^[32] But over the course of the game, after being separated from Barthello and abducted by the Al Bhed, Dona shows a "less seen" kinder side of herself, sending the Al Bhed who died during the Guado attack, out of a desire to repay them for their fighting to help the summoners. Depending on Tidus' suggestion, she quits her pilgrimage and departs to Kilika with Barthello, where she eventually became in charge of the Youth League branch there while Barthello sided with New Yevon. But although they are on opposite sides of the conflict and have stopped talking to each other, they still have feelings for one another. (Close-up of Dona (img))

A summoner, like Yuna, Isaaru (イサール, Isāru^?) travels to temples scattered across Spira with his younger brothers Pacce and Maroda as his guardians. Maroda (マローダ, Marōda^?) is the 2nd born and tends to worry about his brother while Pacce (パッセ, Passe^?) is still a kid, though he pulls his weight well in fights. Since he was a child, Isaaru has always looked up to Lord Braska, and sets up a challenge with Yuna to see who will defeat Sin first.^[33] During their time at Besaid, they got kidnapped by the Al Bhed and were present at Home's destruction. Aboard the Airship, Isaaru was in awe of the Airship while Maroda stated his thoughts about Isaaru's intent to fight Sin. When Yuna is thrown into the Via Purifico, Isaaru is sent by Mika to prevent her and her guardians from escaping. He chooses to leave his brothers out of his "unhappy deed," indicating that he is somewhat reluctant to fight Yuna, and instead duels against her with renamed versions of three of her Aeons (e.g. "Pterya" is Valefor). Yuna, however, defeats him and he allows her to pass; as Auron leaves, he tells Isaaru that his pilgrimage is over. True to Auron's words, Isaaru remained in Bevelle attempting to preserve order until Yuna destroys Sin, with Maroda and Pacce guarding the entrance. Two members of the Crusaders, originally from Besaid. They were sent to participate in the ill-fated Operation Mi'ihen. One of them is killed in the aforementioned Operation, depending on the player's previous actions.

• Luzzu is the older and higher-ranked Crusader. Just before participating in the operation, he confesses to Wakka that he had convinced Chappu to enlist, prompting Wakka to punch him in the face, as he blames him for Chappu's death. Luzzu also told Lulu before leaving Besaid; she also hit him and later tried to warn him not to tell Wakka. Wakka also tells Luzzu not to die so that he can hit him again. Luzzu may die during Operation Mi'ihen, his body being smashed to pieces by Sin. If Luzzu survives, he becomes temporarily depressed and Wakka, rather than rising to anger, instead calms him down, telling him to return to Besaid. Luzzu does so, and, in the memory of his old friend Gatta, rebuilds the Besaid Crusader branch.
• Gatta is the younger and lower-ranked Crusader, who wants a role on the front lines to impress Luzzu and fight Sin. The player can tell him to guard the command center or go to the front lines; if the former choice is made, or if the player makes no suggestions, Luzzu will die, if the latter choice is made, Gatta will die. If Gatta survives, he will be traumatized by seeing Luzzu's corpse and, unable to continue in the Crusaders, returns to Besaid. Once back, however, Gatta rebuilds the Besaid Crusader branch during the crisis among Yevonites to protect the island in case of an attack from fiends. If killed, Tidus (following Sin's slaughter) discovers Gatta's corpse on the beach, an act prompting him to chase Sin down in the ocean.

Maechen is an elderly itinerant scholar who wanders Spira studying its people and history. He exposits many of the strange phenomena and mysteries of Spira, such as the nature of pyreflies and Yunalesca's quest to save Spira. Much of what he knows is knowledge mostly lost to the rest of Spira, and subtly hints that he is far older than most would assume. In truth, he is an unsent, and is over 1000 years old. This is evidenced by a sphere of pre war Zanarkand that the Gullwings recover in which his voice can be heard. Because the sphere of him in Zanarkand was the sphere for the black mage job it is possible that Maechen may be the original black mage from this world. He may be named after Arthur Machen, the 19th century Welsh fantasy writer. (img)

Jyscal Guado (ジスカル＝グアド, Jisukaru Guado^?) was the father of Seymour Guado, a master of Yevon and a progressive leader of the Guado tribe who struggled for a peaceful coexistence between the Guado and human races. Despite criticism from the Guado, he wed a human woman who later gave birth to Seymour. Jyscal's wife and son suffered from discrimination from the other Guado, and Jyscal was ultimately forced to exile the two of them to the island of Baaj in order to maintain peace within the tribe. Nine years before the events of Final Fantasy X, Jyscal became a Maester of Yevon (in accordance with Grand Maester Mika's Sub-Races Appeasement Policy) after introducing the Yevon religion to the Guado.^[34] Jyscal was ultimately murdered at the hands of his own son to pave the way for Seymour's ascension to leader of the Guado and Maester of Yevon. He was sent by Yuna when he provided her the sphere that held his final request. Yuna would later encountered a facsimile of Jyscal who assumed the form of Dark Elemental Fiend in the Via Infinito during FFX-2.

Kelk Ronso (ケルク＝ロンゾ, Keruku-Ronzo^?) is a maester of Yevon and leader of the Ronso Tribe. He leaves Bevelle and returns to Mt. Gagazet after learning that Seymour had murdered his own father. While he initially refuses to let Yuna pass, she and her guardians demonstrate their resolve, and remind him that he continues to protect Mt. Gazaget as a Ronso, not a Maester. He is soon killed by Seymour while attempting to prevent him from pursuing Yuna. Kelk seems to be the only Ronso who is capable of speaking perfect English. He also seems to be the only maester of Yevon other than Kinoc who is not unsent, although he was aware of Mika and Seymour being so.(img)

Yo Mika (ヨー＝マイカ, Yō-Maika^?) is the Grand Maester of Yevon and has ruled for 50 years.^[35][36] When Yuna asks him to send the unsent Seymour during her trial in Bevelle, Mika reveals he too is an unsent, having remained in Spira to guide it even after death.^[37] Although he condemns Yuna as a traitor for killing Seymour and questioning Yevon, he comes to see Yuna as his only hope as order begins to break down later in the game, claiming that her being labeled a traitor was a lie. When he learns that the party has defeated Yunalesca — and, thus, placed the Final Summoning out of reach forever — his spirit departs into the Via Inifito, believing that Spira and all its people will perish, and with him having no wish to see such an end come to pass.^[38]By the time Yuna encountered him in FFX2, Mika became the Concherer Fiend and was finally put to rest.(img) Along with Wen Kinoc, Maester Yo Mika is one of the only two ordinary human characters in the game presented as having both a first and last name.

Wen Kinoc (ウェン＝キノック, Wen-Kinokku^?) is a maester of Yevon and captain of the guard in charge of the military branches of Yevon: the Crusaders (who battle Sin) and the Warrior Monks (who mainly defend Bevelle). He and Auron once served together in the clergy as Warrior Monks and were both considered for the same promotion, which went to Kinoc after Auron refused to marry a priest's daughter.^[39] He is killed by Seymour while accompanying him on a mission to stop Yuna from exiting Bevelle. It is made clear that Kinoc and Auron were close friends, and when Seymour admits to killing Kinoc, Auron is visibly angry, despite realizing that Kinoc had been corrupted by power.^[40] In Final Fantasy X-2, Kinoc's Unsent spirit appeared on the twentieth floor, transformed into the fiend Aranea that Yuna and gang defeated. Kinoc appeared to be the only ordinary human character in the game aside from Maester Mika to have both a first and last name. (img)

O'aka XXIII (, Oaka Nijūsansei^?) merchant who sells weapons and items. He's interested in Yuna in particular, as she reminds him of his late sister. It is unknown under what circumstances his sister died, though it was because of her resemblance to Yuna that O'aka risked his well-being. While in jail, O'aka's younger brother Wantz (who was taking pictures of Yuna and company on a basis) took over the business for his brother even after he was freed. Though he intended to retire, O'aka used the Eternal Calm as a means to make a profit using Rin's shop at Macalania. However, due to Wantz' disappearance and the lake's eventually melting, causing the temple to sink, O'aka got himself in a mess of debts to the Al Bhed he purchased the shop from. (img)

Tromell Guado (トワメル＝グアド, Towameru Guado^?) is a Guado and personal assistant to both Jyscal and Seymour. When Seymour is killed, he destroys Jyscal's sphere, hiding the truth about Seymour's betrayal. Overtime, Tromell regretted that action and the Guado's actions after that ruined Jyscal's legacy. Tromell remained in the Farplane until he and other Guado were forced to leave for the Malacania woods with intent of dying with the Faythless forest.

Lady Yunalesca (ユウナレスカ, Yūnaresuka^?) was a legendary ancient summoner from the city of Zanarkand and the daughter of Yu Yevon. She was the first person to ever defeat Sin. Yunalesca died while battling Sin but managed to bring the first Calm to Spira. After her death, Yunalesca remained as an unsent. To defeat Sin, Yunalesca created the process now known as the Final Summoning, which she believed was the only way to defeat Sin. Despite the failure of the technique to permanently destroy the creature, Yunalesca still espouses its use and, by instructing summoners in its use at the culmination of their pilgrimage, is responsible for perpetuating the cycle of Sin's regeneration and destruction for almost a thousand years. She is fought and vanquished by Yuna and her guardians when she tried to kill them for refusing to uphold the Final Summoning. But on the sequel, FFX2, YRP encountered a copy of Yunalesca created by Zaon in the Via Infinito, assumed her true form as the Chac fiend when it was killed to Zaon's horror. Yuna was named after her by Braska. She is scantily clad (she wears nothing more than a bra-like top and g-string like panties.)^[44][45]

Zaon was the husband of Lady Yunalesca and lived in the 1000-year-old city of Zanarkand. He allowed his wife to turn him into the Fayth of the first Final Aeon, and therefore became the first host of Yu Yevon. Zaon's likeness makes a brief appearance in Final Fantasy X-2 where an apparition looking like him fights Yuna and the others in the 100th floor of a dungeon, as Paragon, only to be destroyed by Trema. Many NPC are free agents players that can be invited to join the Auroch's team. For example, Zev Ronso, who is a recruitable blitzball player that can be found at Dock 4 at Luca. Biggs and Wedge two characters named as a homage to Luke's friends on the X-Wing squad on Star Wars, as well as the characters that go along with Terra in the beggining of Final Fantasy VI, are also free agents available to be scouted.
