Good luck! -- Jasabella 05:15, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

You too, not that you'll need it, as I'm not very good at chess :P – ugen64 18:56, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

Guys what's going on here? ugen64 put it up as a win for white (which it appears to be) which Jasabella changed to a draw. Are you unsure of who won? In that case you should continue playing. Gkhan 08:49, May 18, 2005 (UTC)

I see a forced win for White, but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to spell it out here.-gadfium 09:17, 18 May 2005 (UTC)

I don't. Not yet, at least. I know what you see, but I see a way out of it. Linuxbeak | Desk 10:51, May 18, 2005 (UTC)

There is no way out of it. I know what you're looking at, but that will still lead to mate in a few turns. OK, theoretically, White could blunder... JRM · Talk 11:23, 2005 May 18 (UTC)
It's a forced mate in three. Sam Hocevar 11:42, 18 May 2005 (UTC)
No. Look, this is silly. I'm technically breaking the rules with this, but I don't think anyone will seriously object. 34... Kf8 (34... Kh8? 35. Qxc8+ Qd8 36. Qxd8++) 35. Qxc8 Qd8! (35...Kf7? 36. Qe6+ Kf8 37. Qe8++) 36. Qxd8+ Kf7 and Black will live for a few more turns (but defeat is inevitable). JRM · Talk 12:10, 2005 May 18 (UTC)
No. There is nothing silly here. 35. ... Qd8 36. Re8+ Sam Hocevar 12:15, 18 May 2005 (UTC)
What? 36... Qxe8, and then? Are you imagining a bishop somewhere? :-) JRM · Talk 12:19, 2005 May 18 (UTC)
Eww, my bad. In my head the king was still in g8. I'll hide in a corner now. Sam Hocevar 12:24, 18 May 2005 (UTC)
Forced win might be a little bit strong, but Black has to give up both Rook and Queen to avoid the immediate forced mate, and I'm reasonably sure that there's a series of forced checks leading to mate following, but with quite a number of variations. I used to be able to analyse this sort of thing in my head for any number of variations and moves, now I get - not lost, so much as bored - after about ten moves. If I had a board in front of me I'd probably find a quicker mate than that, but it might involve White setting up a move, leaving Black to make an unforced move, which is less elegant.-gadfium 19:55, 18 May 2005 (UTC)
I had a chess program analyze the position. (Yes, I was lazy.) The mate is actually only 3 moves after the queen is captured. After 34... Kf8 there is a mate in 5. Some of this is repeating what's above, but in full: 35. Qxc8+ Qd8 (if ...Kf7 then 36. Qe6+ Kf8 37. Qe8#) 36. Qxd8+ Kf7 37. Qd6. For all but 2 Black moves, we proceed with 38. Qe6+ followed by 39. Qe8#. If 37... g6 or 37... g5 then 38. Re7+ Kf8 (or ...Kg8) 39. Qd8#. I like forced mates. :) Eric119 19:22, 21 May 2005 (UTC)

From what I understand Ugen64, playing Black, resigned by writing 1-0 as his move. Take a look at this diff: [1] The game should be called as a win to White. Sjakkalle 14:11, 18 May 2005 (UTC)

We should probably update the rules to clearly reflect the procedures for resigning, and agreeing to a draw (though the latter is of course quite unproductive in this tournament, as you'll just have to play another game). This is causing unnecessary confusion. JRM · Talk 14:18, 2005 May 18 (UTC)
Surely, our game is proceeding faster than, say, Game 1, and there is no harm in playing another game to determine the winner? Maybe we'll play an, ahem, less boring game... – ugen64 14:46, 18 May 2005 (UTC)
The problem was that there was uncertainty over who decided what. Did you two arrange this on IRC, or something? You confused the hell out of the kibitzers. :-) If you want to agree to a draw, that's fine, of course. JRM · Talk 14:53, 2005 May 18 (UTC)

Screwed with all your minds did I? I love playing mind games... except chess -- Jasabella 16:42, 18 May 2005 (UTC)

Hee hee - you won after move 19, because I was seeing things... XD – ugen64 19:53, 18 May 2005 (UTC)
I don't think the game was lost. In fact, 33. ... b4 was the losing move; other moves such as Qd7, Qf6 or Qd6 would probably have won easily. Sam Hocevar 1 July 2005 19:04 (UTC)
