Sizzler (missile)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The SS-N-27B "Sizzler" is a Russian made anti-naval cruise missile designed for the capability of destroying aircraft carriers. The Pentagon currently considers it a significant threat against U.S. Navy carrier fleets. [1]

[edit] Design

The Sizzler is designed to be fast, maneuverable, low-flying and dynamic in its movements. In addition to being difficult to detect, it employs dodging and a sudden burst of speed when within 10 nautical miles of the target. [1] It is eight meters long, and carries a 200 kg warhead. [2]

[edit] Political

It is believed that China has purchased a set of these missiles in addition to diesel-electric Kilo class submarines designed to carry and deploy them. [2] While Russia has also offered to sell the missiles to Iran, there is only speculation as to whether or not the sale actually happened. Longtime Naval weapons system evaluator Orville Hanson expressed concern as to China's 2002 acquisition of the Sizzlers pointing to their desire to retake Taiwan. [1]
