From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Six Moments Musicaux, Op.16 is a set of solo piano pieces composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff in 1896. The influence of Frédéric Chopin and of Franz Liszt can be found in the individual pieces.

  • No.1 in B flat minor
  • No.2 in E flat minor
  • No.3 in B minor
  • No.4 in E minor
  • No.5 in D flat major
  • No.6 in C major

The Moments Musicaux are disconsolate (No.1), agitated (No.2), lyrical but tormented (Nos. 3 and 5), and based on obsessive rhythms (Nos. 4 and 6).

Perhaps the most famous ones are Nos. 2 (with its agitated notes giving richer sound to the surrounding detached octaves), 3 (having a unique singing line, a very distinctive staccato bass line in the middle section, and a beautiful point of climax), and 5 (which appears in many classical music collections, both sheet music books and recordings).

The very distinctive influence by Frédéric Chopin can be noted on No. 5; this piece carries many characteristics of Chopin's Nocturnes.
