[edit] Lightsaber deactivates... yeah, about that...

I would like to dispute "Upon contact with a lightsaber, the lightsaber blade instantly deactivates". Where is the source for this. KOTOR I clearly states that the cortosis weave protects the blade from lightsaber sparring damage. Due to the lack of a source, I will change this unless someone can provide backup for the article. I would change it now, but whoever wrote this seems to feel very strongly that the KOTOR mentioning is a misconception. -Xol 02:08, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

In 'I, Jedi' when Corran strikes a corrosis-protected gauntlet with his lightsaber, the weapon fails. But that might be due to the extensive use the lightsbaer was put through (fighting through an imperial citadel) or Corran's imperfectly designed saber (his dual-phase function failed, possibly due to the use of manufactured gemstones) or the unorthodox method of construction (according to 'I, Jedi,' lightsabers tradionally take some time to build, but Corran used a method developed during the Clone Wars to complete his saber in two days) - Raveled
Lightsabers are known to fail occasionally, (randomly at strong contact with another lightsaber (or vibroblade)), after a lot of stress (like you mentioned), I believe; I don't think that incident related to the cortosis in particular (or why don't all Jedi/Sith carry a vibroblade to disarm their opposition during duels?). -Xol 03:13, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
I get the feeling, from most of the books, that the knowledge of cotorosis has fallen out of regular knowledge amoungst the New Jedi Order. Whether it was supressed by the Empire, by the Old Order, or was lost in some other means I don't know. - Raveled
I have the Dark Side sourcebook for the Star Wars D20 RPG around somewhere, and I distinctly remember reading that alchemical cortosis (made through Sith Alchemy) or cortosis weave (torward the New Jedi Order era, highly advanced, expensive, and difficult technological production made cortosis manufacturable) will cause a lightsaber to fail and power down. There are also multiple scenes in the Clone Wars comics, I beleive, where cortosis gauntlets or blades are used to disable or defend against lightsabers. KotOR is innaccurate as a source, because cortosis would not simply be strong enough to resist lightsaber damage, nor nowhere near as common as to be in any melee weapon. Cortosis in KotOR was likely just to avoid lightsaber-equipped Jedi/Sith disarming opponents pathetically easly.--Vince Skrapits 23:04, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

There's also Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast where cortosis armor is used because it resists lightsabers. It doesn't deactivate lightsabers in that game. 68.70.219.17 04:12, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

Problem solved! WookMuff 04:11, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

just so you guys know at the end of the hand of thrawn boks LUke and Mara have to cut througha walll covered in cortosis and it shuts down all lightsabers that come in contact wiht it.

[edit] Tavion's Ability

Edited the section on new Sith using this weapon, as it related to Tavion. There's no evidence that Tavion knows how to use a Sith Sword; while her body does wield one at one point in the game, it does so while being inhabited by Markas Ragnos. Tavion herself wields a lightsaber. Since the Sith Sword is an archaic weapon, there's no reason to assume that a modern Sith (especially a third-rate constant-apprentice like Tavion ;-) ) would be able to wield one without special training, either by a SIth holocron or the spirit of an ancient Sith.

[edit] Canon

If we compleatly cut out cortosis weave simply because it's not Grade A Star Wars canon, then we can delete the whole article. After all, George Lucas never mentions Sith swords in the movies, either.

[edit] Redundant

The two paragraphs following the sourcebook quote say pretty much the same as the quote itself. I'd suggest they get deleted, as they only repeat the quote with slightly altered wording. --M.A. 01:28, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

cortosis doesn't deactivate lightsabers according to both KoTOR and the book Darth Bane: Path of destruction. It merely protects against lightsaber attacks because it is incredibly strong.
