From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Attention!- We need more happiness around here. If you can make someone laugh, even a little, you've improved the Wikipedia community. Don't just be civil, be forward. Congratulate people when they do a good job, no matter what it is. Too many people have left Wikipedia. Let's not let the rest go, too. If you ever feel stressed, or are at all worried about something, please leave a message for me at my talk page. I want to listen, I want to talk, but, most importantly, I want everybody to feel better! Stolen blithely from Sean Black's talk page.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.
Signed...

Template:Srigranth, etc

I mainly work on Sikhiwiki and have transferred articles from there to Wikipedia as there seems to be very little on Sikhism here and very few people are adding to the articles on this fifth most important and the youngest religions of the world - I do not have the time to "cleanup" these articles and I will leave it to good people like you to do the honours.

To get verbatim quotations, a link is required to the original SGGS text and this template was designed by me for that purpose. I cannot see why it violates any guidelines because all it does is provide a easy link to check the quotes as authentic - which I would have thought was critical to make an article relevant in this field.

I do not follow your logic – Is it more important to make sure people are quoting correctly from the text or the style. The layout & colours can be changed but the concept is very important.

I will leave it to you guys to decide as I do not feel that there is anyone with an dedication to Sikhism working on Wikipedia and I do not believe that you appear to understand the relevance and the reason for this template.

You do not give any details of why this template is not suitable apart from violation of guidelines - which part of the guidelines and what are the exact reasons - I would have thought that's what really matters. --Hari Singh 11:09, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

VandalProof 1.1 is Now Available For Download

Happy Easter to all of you, and I hope that this version may fix your current problems and perhaps provide you with a few useful new tools. You can download version 1.1 at User:AmiDaniel/VandalProof. Let me warn you, however, to please be extremely careful when using the new Rollback All Contributions feature, as, aside from the excessive server lag it would cause if everyone began using it at once, it could seriously aggitate several editors to have their contributions reverted. If you would like to experiment with it, though, I'd be more than happy to use my many sockpuppets to create some "vandalism" for you to revert. If you have any problems downloading, installing, or otherwise, please tell me about them at User:AmiDaniel/VP/Bugs and I will do my best to help you. Thanks. AmiDaniel (Talk) 06:41, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Inotes

True inotes do have disadvantages, but they also have the advantage of making the text a smoother read. A mixture of footnotes and inotes makes a better article. Ultimately it boils down to a situation wherethe author has to decide on what needs to be added as footnotes and what needs to inotes. My thumb rule is to footnote key figures, new matter and contentious phrases. For an example of excessive use of footnotes see Mark W Felt. =Nichalp «Talk»= 07:30, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi

I noticed that you requested for Hindi wikipedia. Just to let you know that hi: is already existing. Many of your edits are very nice. Keep it up! Regards, ImpuMozhi 00:50, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

Ah, I see. That makes matters clearer. Please restitute the request, if you wish, and sorry for the disruption. Ciao around. ImpuMozhi 14:10, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
Maybe you would want to add it here, thats the correct page. ImpuMozhi 14:22, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
Peculiar problem! Very unfortunate, and I see from the notice pasted on that page itself that "you will still be unable to edit Wikipedia while the IP you are using is blocked" so there is no help to it. Also, there must be many potential good-contributors in your college (I know one!) and blocking this IP range cannot be a solution. As of now, the problem is not major (<50 edits, many made by you, I think?)--lets hope it stays that way. Bright side: you must be very popular in college, with people feeling they need to do masti with you online, apart from face-to-face every day! Regards, ImpuMozhi 15:17, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

Your Modi revert is unfair

When someone calls a CM who has won elections on a clean sweep as a "hate figure" that is obviously a POV I can give examples of atleast 10 prominent muslims who dont hate Modi, so does that make modi a muslim hate figure

Because you have a lot of time and robots to keep reverting , that doesnt mean you can lie A lie told 1000 times may convince , but is a lie nevertheless Kartik.nanjund 14:38, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi - I'm sorry but I can't join IRC for a while. Thanks for the invite, and I'll join it as soon as I have some time for it. I see you are encountering some criticism on Narendra Modi - my congratulations to you for standing up for quality on the most-attacked page on Wikipedia. Rama's Arrow 15:09, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Narendra Modi is a "hate figure" simply becoz millions of Muslims and others hate him. It doesn't make him evil or responsible for killing 2,000 Muslims, which is a separate issue. I think Karthik is trying to make sure that Modi gets a better introduction, but there's no use to deny that Modi provokes intense feelings all over India. Rama's Arrow 15:15, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Re: Rani

I have done the following:

  1. Semi protected the page, so he can't edit as an anon
  2. Posted a message on this and the IP's talk pages explaining him the situation and requesting him to follow up on the Talk:Rani Mukerji page
  3. Warned him that the reverts might lead him to get blocked.

Please review the situation after two days. If he fails to discuss and continues to indulge in hagiography, please ensure that he is blocked. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:28, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi, as for your query all wars with the name have "War" see List of conflicts in Asia as a sample where all wars in Wikipedia have the "w" capitalized. --Idleguy 13:23, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Re:FA

Hi - Writing an FA just depends on how passionate you are about the topic, and how much one likes to write. For example, user:Dwaipayanc just fixed up the article on his hometown, Kolkata real nice. I personally travelled to Lothal as a kid, and I was mesmerized by the life of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and his role in the Political integration of India. So just think which topic is close to your heart - except your love-life (can't write a bio on your girlfriend either...).

The process is nicely organized here - so you can learn from the advice you get on PR, FAC and the works of others. On writing and judging FAs, there are people here who far exceed my own abilities - like user:Taxman, user:Sundar, user:Nichalp, user:Saravask, user:Deeptrivia, user:Pepsidrinka, user:AreJay and a few more definitely. Just read their FAs, and all will be revealed. Rama's Arrow 18:53, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Re: protect

I'm inlined to allow Johnleemk's protection last for a day so that Shez does cannot edit the article. The good news is that he is talking to Zora, so we have made some progress. Try and convince him that we write in a neutral point of view and that our policy is that: 'If you don't want your writing to be edited mercilessly or redistributed by others, do not submit it." =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:25, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

Freddie Mercury article

Hi I only changed that Freddie Mercury was the first Indian/Iranian rocker. I would think that's legitimate since it makes peace with both sides of the debate about his ethnicity. To say that he was just an Indian would be not be too specific since he also was apparently proud of his Iranian ancestry. It is true that Parsis are more genetically close to Indians and to Iranians. However, his Iranian background cannot be denied. So I dont see why that should have been changed.

Hi its me again. I signed in. Please go see the legacy section in the Freddie Mercury page. Let me know if that is okay with the NPOV standards. I would think so because it does not take account of hearsay rather gives both valid conclusions.

Roses from you

Yes, roses from you are really nice. Thank you. And, I remember these words of Elizabeth

A Rose
by Elizabeth

A lovely rose with petals soft
A scent so sweet and light
So beautiful a flower
With colors shining bright.
But something not so savory
About the fragrant rose -
The thorns, so sharp upon the stem,
That sharpen as it grows.
Yet still lovely is the flower
Despite the thorns that prick
Just as life and love are sweet
They too have thorns that stick.
But do not fear to live or love,
Life's not exempt from pain -
So pick a rose, you may get hurt,
But you will also gain!

I appreciate your faith in me, and was overwhelmed by the positive response to my RFA; for it shows that at least I'm doing something right. :) I've started working to improve myself already, and I hope that next time, things run better, and maybe, just maybe, one day we can bask on the shores of Admintopia together. Thanks and cheers, _-M o P-_ 13:44, Sunday April 1, 2007 (UTC)
