Sirasa TV

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sirasa TV is an analogue terrestrial television network in Sri Lanka. It was initially established as 'MTV' in 1993 but later changed its name to Sirasa TV in 1998 to similar itself to their Radio network Sirasa FM. Sirasa TV is fully owned by the Sri Lankan business company Capital Maharaja.

In the past several years the channel has grown and being one of the few channels being broadcast islandwide and therefore catering to a much wider audience, has become one of the most watched TV networks in Sri Lanka adhering to its motto of The People's Channel. Sirasa's most popular TV program in its brief history, may probably be the musical reality show named Sirasa Superstar.

[edit] Failed International Plans

Sirasa's parent company, Capital Maharaja., launched Sirasa TV and Shakthi TV on the Sky Digital platform (UK). This project began in 2001. Sri Lankan viewers worldwide were allowed to watch Sirasa TV free of charge on a trial period of 3 months after the international launch. However, when the 3 month trial period ended, the viewers would have to pay an expensive charge each month to receive the channel. Thus it lost popularity and began to suffer financially. Therefore the project was cancelled in 2002.
