Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School is the largest public secondary school located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The school is named after the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Winston Churchill .
Churchill Secondary is one of two International Baccalaureate schools and one of three French Immersion secondary schools in Vancouver.
The majority of Churchill's student population is Asian, with most students being Chinese. There are also many students of Filipino and East Indian backgrounds.
Churchill is fed by the surrounding elementary schools in its catchment area. They include Sir Wilfrid Laurier Elementary School, Dr. Annie B. Jamieson Elementary School, Sir William Osler Elementary School, J.W. Sexsmith Elementary School, and David Lloyd George Elementary School. Although not within Churchill's catchment area, L'École Bilingue, L'École Quilchena and Sir James Douglas Elementary School feed into its French Immersion Program.

[edit] IB Programme
Churchill Secondary offers the IB Diploma Programme (International Baccalaureate) to approximately 130 students every year. IB courses offered include English, French, Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, History, Art, World Cultures, Film Studies, Theatres, Mathematics, and Theory of Knowledge. There is also a Pre-IB year in grade 10, and an informal Middle Years Programme for grades 8-9. The IB program provides a challenging and globally accepted curriculum for all its students.
Information sessions are held each year by the school for prospective IB students. Entry into the program requires a written application, previous academic performance record, testing and sometimes an interview.
Arguably, the program better prepares students for post-secondary studies, and a high percentage of IB graduates go on to prestigious universities.
[edit] French immersion
Secondary French immersion is for students continuing on from elementary French immersion. It is an excellent program to take opening up many doorways and opportunities later on in life. They can receive a Bilingual Graduation Certificate. Students in French immersion can also participate in the IB program, and receive a bilingual IB diploma.

Churchill Secondary is the "steward school" of Ideal Mini School, which is located at 855 West 59th Avenue, within a few blocks of the main Churchill school. Although Ideal Mini School does not have its own principal and is administrated and funded by Churchill Secondary, it runs as a separate school under the leadership of head teacher Jim King.
An application test covering both IQ and EQ is required to be eligible to attend Ideal Mini School. There are 6 classrooms in the school, which is currently attended by only 112 students. Most senior students at Ideal Mini attend elective classes at Churchill Secondary. Also Ideal students can attend any clubs or sports teams at Churchill.
Ideal differs from Churchill because of the Integrated Arts Programs available to the students at Ideal, while Churchill does not offer these courses. Another way Ideal differs from Churchill is its small school size and how everything is informal compared to other schools. The teaching in Ideal is very personalized due to the small school size. The school offers a intimate and creative environment where teachers and students are treated as equals.
Over the course of the years, Ideal and Churchill have grown more seperate and a steady pace. This results in false ideas about Ideal within the Churchill, which puts the relationship on a sour note. Churchill has vowed however to try to repair the damages. However communal feeling in Ideal put doubt in Churchill's vow[citation needed]. Publicly Churchill and Ideal both deny and problems with their relationship.
[edit] Science fair
An annual school science fair is held at Churchill Secondary, and twenty projects are chosen to represent the school at the Vancouver District Science Fair. Winners there move onto the Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair, and then onto the Canada-Wide Science Fair. Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School has been well represented in past years, and at the CWSF2005, Churchill students set a record for all schools in Canada, taking home 18 medals
