[edit] Historical Need
Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology cherishes the heritage of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and of the Aligarh Movement. A great educational and social reformer, Sir Syed emerged on the scene in the Sub-Continent towards the middle of the 19th century. At a critical juncture of history, he came up with more education as the centerpiece of a framework of hope and action for the Muslims of the area. A monument to Sir Syed’s approach making mission was the well-known Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College at Aligarh that later become the famous Muslim University.
The driving force behind these institutes was the well-known Aligarh Movement, brought forth by relentless work by Sir Syed, his associates and immediate followers. Although conceived in a particular context of the subcontinent, the Movement is remarkably universal and timeless in the essence of its appeal and applicability.
Pakistan owes to Sir Syed and to the Aligarh Movement in a special way. What was started basically as an educational and social movement, became all embracing and inevitably encompassed a political movement as well, leading finally to the creation of new country. The torchbearers of the Aligarh Movement and the students of the Aligarh Muslim University did a yeoman service to the struggle for Pakistan. When the country came in to being, the old boys of Aligarh remained in the forefront to run the country at every level and in every walk of life. True to its representation of the movement, AMUOBA made distinctive efforts in the field of education, and a notable fruition of those efforts is Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology.
Following Sir Syed's basic mission and abiding by the spirit of the Aligarh Movement, AMUOBA has focused attention from the very beginning on furthering education in the country, especially that of science and technology. A significant achievement in this field has been the establishment of Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET). Through sustained and intense effort by the Association, SSUET came into being on 8 October 1993, and its Charter formalities were finally completed by an Act passed by the Sindh Assembly on 17 September 1995.
The strength of Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology has steadily increased to the present about 3,400+ students of BS Programme, 124 students of MS Programme, and some 124-faculty members. Presently, it is providing degree-course instruction in five disciplines, namely,
• Computer Engineering • Electronic Engineering • Biomedical Engineering • Civil Engineering • Computer Science
Masters course in • Networks • Software Engineering
Having the distinction of being the first technical university in the country in the private sector, Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology itself has maintained a completely self-reliant and non-political profile. Consistent with the underlying principles of the Aligarh Movement, SSUET lays special emphasis on quality of education, discipline and the feeling of brotherhood among the students.
[edit] At Present
Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology has been sponsored by Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys' Association of Pakistan, Karachi. It was set up through Sindh Government Ordinance No. XII of 1993 dated 6 October 1993 and the Charter granted by Governor of Sindh on 8 October 1993. The Act was passed by the provincial Assembly of Sindh on 17 September 1995 and assented by Governor of Sindh on 16 October 1995, and published in the Gazette as "Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology, Act 1995 - Sindh Act No. X of 1995."
The Association decided to establish a high class University of Engineering and Technology as a Center of Excellence offering instructions of International Standard with integrated programmes dealing with the fast growing technologies of the world with courses designed to produce qualified personnel of high caliber specializing in new technologies needed in developing countries. This objective is in line with the Government policy of inducting the private sector for promoting Education in Engineering and Technical subjects at under-graduate and post-graduate levels.
In its first phase, the University has been established on a plot of 8 acres in Block-5 of Gulshan-e-Iqbal on Main University Road. For future expansion, a plot measuring 200 acres has been acquired on link road.
The Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys' Association has a long and cherished history of its association with and engagement in Educational and cultural activities. It had established "Aligarh Institute of Technology" for imparting Diploma level Course nine years back and is now a leading institution in the Country. The Association had also a plan under consideration for setting up a Technical University. After the announcement of Government policy in December 1992, wherein universities were allowed in the Private Sector, concerted efforts were made to that effect through a National Committee of Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology for this purpose.
There were only two Engineering Colleges in the country at the time of Independence in 1947. Due to concerted and determined efforts of the Government, a reasonable improvement was made over the years but it still lacked a break-through in quality education. It is difficult for the technical education centres to produce the necessary skilled and trained man-power and expertise needed to cope with rapidly emerging technologies. The 6th and 7th Five-year Plans threw sufficient light on the importance and need of the development of facilities for producing technical/vocational Engineers and Research Workers. It was as a result of all these factors that a final move was made which resulted in the establishment of Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi on 8 October 1993.
Within a short span the University has achieved a commendable position. It is now the member of "International Association of Universities" and "Association of Common Wealth Universities". An other worth mentioning fact is, that Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology is being represented on the "Governing Board" of "International Association of Universities" through its Vice Chancellor who is, one of the members of this board. The board has forty members representing different parts of the world and advises UNESCO on higher education.
The prospects for employment of graduates from this University are bright in view of their expected quality education and training. The demand for highly qualified Engineers and Scientists specializing in new disciplines of engineering and technology is increasing because of the need to modernize and automate the industry so as to be competitive in the International Export Market for manufactured goods. Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology can, it is hoped meet the challenges of self reliance in scientific research and development.
This in not mere expectation, but the facts and figures show that government, semi-government and private organizations prefer to engage the graduates of this University because of their skill and quality of Education.

Deployment of Guards from OREL The guards from OREL, Clad in uniform giving robust look, have added to the effectiveness of the security system. The Students do realize that the present security has some persons, who are alien to them and will call a spade a spade. In the presence of the present security the tendency of the students to neglect the instructions from the administration has very much been discouraged. Stand on the Punishments Awarded The stand, taken by the University to remain strict on the punishments awarded to the students on their wrong deeds during examination, has dispelled the wrong notion that punishments are ultimately waived off. This has made them cautious and compelled to respect university rules.
