Sir Joshua Bell

Sir Joshua Peter Bell K.C.M.G. (January 19 1827 - December 20 1881) Queensland Pastoralist and Parliamentarian. Father of parliamentarian Joshua Thomas Bell.

[edit] Early life

Born in Kildare, Ireland, emigrated to Australia about 1830. Sir Joshua attended the Sydney College and King's School, Parramatta.

His father took over the lease of Jimbour Station on Queensland's Darling Downs in 1843, sending Sir Joshua and his brother (Alexander) to manage the property in 1848.

Sir Joshua rapidly assumed sole control and made a name for himself as an able manager.

As a prominent landholder Sir Joshua was invited to stand for election in the seat of West Morton in 1862. He won with a substantial majority and held the seat until his move to the set of Northern Downs.

In 1868 he successfully stood in the seat of Northern Downs, which included Jimbour.

He remained in Parliament holding several Ministerial postions until he was appointed President of the Legislative Council in 1879.
