Sipacapa

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sipacapa is a municipality in the San Marcos department of Guatemala, in the northwestern Guatemalan rural highlands. The population of Sipacapa is 14,000, spread among 14 villages. Sipacapa is considered a liguistic community, as Sipacapense is a language unique to the municipality.

Sipacapa is currently the center of a dispute between local farmers, primarily of Mayan (Sipacapense) descent, and Goldcorp, a Canadian company that already operates an open pit goldmine in the neighbouring municipality.
