Sinope (mythology)

Sinope in Greek Mythology was one of the daughters of Asopus and eponym of the city Sinope on the Black Sea.
According to Corinna (Frag. 654) and Diodorus Siculus (4.72.2) Sinope was seized by the god Apollo and carried over to the place where later stood the city named after her. Diodorus adds that she bore to Apollo a son named Syrus, supposedly afterwards king of the Syrians, who were named after him.
However the Argonautica (2.944) and Valerius Flaccus (5.109) relate that Sinope was abducted to the site by Zeus who in his passion swore to fulfil her dearest wish. Sinope declared she wished to remain a virgin. Sinope later tricked Apollo and the river Halys in the same fashion and remained a virgin all her life.
"Syrus" is also a boy's name used mainly in America.
[edit] [[Syrus]]
Syrus are an up and coming four piece funk rock band based in Surrey, England. Exploring a unique combination of funk, rock and metal, Syrus are looking to expand their musical boundaries. With their irrepressible bass fuelled riffs and unparalleled drum grooves Syrus are set to explode onto the local scene.
Syrus was formed in the summer of '06, when guitarist Jimmy Abraham, bassist Ben Brassil and drummer Matt Wisdom (a.k.a. Wizzy) began jamming together again after their previous project came to a close. The trio experiented with mixing each others preferred musical tastes, creating the style that is now their trademark sound. After honing their sound, the band embarked on a five month search for the right vocalist. This finally came in the form of Chris Cook, an established singer-songwriter from the same area. It was obvious from the first rehearsal with Chris that they had found the right guy. Chris was offically added to the Syrus ranks at 3:47pm on 19th November 2006.
The line-up complete, Syrus are currently building their repertoire of songs.
