Sinclair Secondary School
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sinclair Secondary School is located in Whitby, Ontario, Canada within the Durham District School Board. The school offers courses ranging from grades nine to twelve. While the school is geared towards a post-secondary education at University, many courses are offered to College-bound students as well. Sinclair is fully networked with five hundred and fifty computers. It serves a diversity of needs including Special Education and French Immersion. It also offers many extra-curricular activities, and sports clubs, such as football, golf, wrestling, curling, girls ice hockey and baseball. Sinclair Secondary provides students with more than just a classroom learning experience. The Cooperative education department and the Coop program allows students to learn and gain experience in a field pf work that they will be able to pursue in the future. The Coop program offers various placements, from vetrinary practices to architectural firms. As a result of all this academic oppurtunity, Sinclair Secondary has some of the highest provincial test results in both Literacy and Math.
The school was founded in 1994, on top of the old Sinclair one-room schoolhouse site, servicing North Whitby. In 2004 Donald A. Wilson Secondary School opened taking a portion of the Sinclair student body with it.
Currently, Sinclair offers a variety of extra-curricular activites including clubs funded by Student Parliament. Among these include the popular "Anime Club", "Debate Club" and "S.T.A.R. (Students Together Against Racism)". Sinclair has also had a variety of failed Student Parliament funded clubs such as the "Gay Straight Alliance" and "Impact.". In more recent times, the school had undergone extensive fundraising that had the support of students and staff for the "Race Against Time" campaign. This fundraising demonstrated the awareness that students presented towards the issue of AIDS, and the money was donated to the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Stephen Lewis, the United Nation's Secretary Generals Special Envoy, was presented with this sum of money during his visit to the school. This money will be put towards more than a cure towards the crisis in Africa. Craig Kielburger, who founded the Free the Children foundation, will be visiting the school in May of 2006, and order to raise awareness of issues relavent to his commitment.
Sinclair Secondary School consists of four floors; two above the main floor and one below. It includes two cafetoriums (arguably, one is part of the attached Durham Board Education Centre), two gymnasiums (one large and one small) and one resource centre where students can freely use computers and books, provided they have a valid student identification card. There are two football fields which can also be used for soccer. The estimated population of the school is 1800 students. The school is the largest secondary school in Whitby.
