Hi. I'm currently changing the Wikipedia coding on some biographies, so that those with names beginning "Mc" are listed under "Mac". This is a fairly standard way of indexing names.

I rolled back you edits to Anne McCaffrey before I realized what you are doing. But I'm not sure it's worth reinstating—I've usually seen her name alphabetized under "Mc", not "Mac". I also reverted an article -- you might want to do a better job of explaining in the edit summary -- but besides that, I'm very skeptical about that being the "standard" way to index Mc names. My dictionary list Mc entries in alpha order NOT by Mac. Such a wide-ranging change should be discussed first--probably on the Manual of Style talk page. older≠wiser 04:01, Nov 26, 2004 (UTC)

Anne McCaffrey does NOT spell her name as Mac...this is extremely incorrect. No library I have ever seen alphabetizes her this way and the author has specifically written that spelling it that way is incorrect. --ssd 05:45, 26 Nov 2004 (UTC)

And Mary-Lou McDonald is definately a Mc, so rolling back there as well Kiand 10:58, 26 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I'm used to this being the order for sorting of names in the phone book and I'd be quite happy if it was a wikipedia standard, but given that it's not, perhaps hold off on these edits until it's been discussed in that context. jlang 12:00, 26 Nov 2004 (UTC)
