Simon Nolan
Page has been flagged for deletion, due to 'spam' link, and no evidence that Nolan is an 'author of note'. I have removed the link, but another one has popped up relating to someone else entirely. Nolan has published two novels, both critically acclaimed, and both translated into German. Whether or not this makes him an 'author of note' seems to be very much a matter of judgement.
- It was me that set the deletion flag. I am happy to give the reasons here. Normally I would have let you know via your user page but you haven't set one up so I couldn't. The spam link was in the Whitehawk article where you added an external link to that page linking to Simon Nolan's page. As this has no real relevance to an article on Whitehawk itself, I took it to be spam advertising his books. Google searches on "Simon Nolan", do indeed link to online stores selling his books, but I found no "critical acclaim" apart from that from the author himself. You would expect an "author of note" to secure some google hits apart from Amazon etc (which come up for ANY published author). His first two books are published by a publisher so small they don't even appear to have a homepage and the third is "printed to order". Again, this doesn't suggest an "author of note". With the only contributions from yourself being this article and a link to Simon Nolan's homepage in an unrelated article, I had my suspicions that you are Simon Nolan himself. If I am wrong in that assumption I hope you will correct me. Please note that the flag does not automatically mean this article WILL be deleted, it is there to start a discussion on whether it should stay OR be deleted. If Simon Nolan IS an author of note then evidence to that effect (sales figures, reviews, the books being stocked in major offline stores [ie real ones, not online ones!] will probably ensure that the article stays. Hope this has been of help. Fork me 13:52, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
As a new user you may find the following link useful Wikipedia:Vanity_page. This is the policy I think your article breaks. I may, however, be wrong which is the purpose of the request for discussion tag that I added. (On another note, you should add four tildes (~) after posts in discussion pages such as this so people can easily see who you are and when you posted). I hope you find this useful. Also, this page: Wikipedia:Notability_(people). Note the section on authors: "Published authors, editors and photographers who received multiple independent reviews of or awards for their work". Evidence of multiple idependent reviews (eg in newspapers, magazines etc) would be enough to confirm the author is "of note". Fork me 15:09, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
§§§§ (don't think I've got a tilde! sorry) I am actually a friend (and fan) of the author. The link to the website has been removed, and I decided to take out any references to book 'Whitehawk'. The other two novels, though, have indeed been acclaimed critically, and gone into translation (German). Here are some quotes, which appear in the paperback edition of 'As Good as it Gets': 'This is the funniest book I've read in aeons. What sets Nolan's novel apart is the acuteness of his comic observation. Nolan is brilliant...' Time Out (UK) 'An exceptionally funny and realistic comic novel, which is beautifully observed with the kind of dry intelligence that makes you glad there is someone out there keeping tabs on the world. Nolan's eye is perfect for observation comedy - ably jaundiced and disaffected without being embittered and misanthropic.' The Sunday Times (UK) 'Nolan writes with an unpretentious been-there-done-that eye for the details of amateur debauchery and motley student life... warmly funny and immensely readable' The Times (UK) 'A quietly clever insight into temptation... Nolan plays with the inevitable psychological effects of the drug... the stages of their addiction are gently and comically rendered.' The Independent on Sunday (UK)
and from the paperback of The Vending Machine of Justice: 'a savage take on truth and justice, with a real satirical bite that hasn't jumped off the page like this since Evelyn Waugh.' The Independent (UK) 'imagine Twelve Angry Men set as a comedy by the seaside... fantastic' Time Out (UK) 'hilarious' Daily Mirror (UK) I've never heard of the publisher either, though someone told me they publish The Joy of Sex! It is regrettable that the books are now out of print, so no longer for sale in real shops. Maybe if more people knew about this author that situation could be altered. I believe Nolan to be 'an author of note' and thus worthy of inclusion: although as the books are (most unusually!)set in Brighton (UK), Brighton residents (like myself)are perhaps biassed! Try reading one, see what you think.
- As no-one else has posted a wish to delete and you have now provided evidence of postive critique from major publications, I have removed the Request For Deletion tag. As a friendly word of advice to someone new (I haven't been on here that long myself and remeber finding my feet here!), these could have been put in the main article in the first place, and the sleevenotes would count as a valid reference. If you want help putting them in and referencing them, feel free to contact me via my talk page. Fork me 11:56, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
§§§§ Ok. Thanks fork me. I'm not (as you might have guessed) hugely competent with the whole internet thing. I thought putting the quotes on would look like 'advertising', which I understand wikipedia is against. That's why I included a link to Simon's web page, which has a whole page of reviews. I'll add some quotes to main page. Thanks for your help. All best Lx
