Sensei Simon Staples has a distinguished record in Shotokan karate, starting training young under Sensei Jess Lavender at Billingshurst, West Sussex. He became Shodan at 14 years old and Nidan at 16. Aged 18 he went to Tokyo to train at the JKA's Hoitsugan and Honbu Dojos. He was a member of the kata team that won the Japan Area Championships. Back in England training under Senseis Jess Lavender and Dave Hazard he attained Sandan aged 19 and had a very successful competition career in both kata and kumite.

He later shared the teaching at Billingshurst with Sensei Lavender and was eventually given control with Sensei Lavender taking over from Sensei Hazard at Brighton. Sensei Staples has successfully developed his club under the name Kihaku Dojo with many competition victories in senior and junior competitions, while maintaining an emphasis on effective self defence.
