Sime Darby is a major company in Malaysia.
[edit] History
In 1910, William Middleton Sime, a Scottish gentleman, and Henry Darby, an English gentleman, teamed up to form a company to manage 500 acres (2 kmĀ²) of rubber estates in the state of Malacca. Lending their names to their business venture, they registered the company as Sime, Darby & Co Limited.
In 1979, the company changed its corporate name to Sime Darby Berhad and evolved into a large Malaysian conglomerate with core businesses in plantations, property, heavy equipment, motor, and energy & utilities. It has global presence in Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines and Australia. Sime Darby's non-core business units such as healthcare, insurance, and home products are grouped under its Allied Products and Services division (APS). Subsidiaries under APS include Subang Jaya Medical Centre (healthcare), Sime Alexander Forbes (insurance), and Dunlopillo Malaysia Sdn Bhd (home products).
Two of Sime Darby's five core business units are structured into publicly listed companies: Sime UEP, Sime Engineering Services Berhad. The parent company itself is listed on Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad.
