Silvacane Abbey
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Silvacane Abbey is a Romanesque Cistercian monastery in the municipality of La Roque d'Antheron in in Provence, France. It is one of the three Cistercian abbeys known as the "three sisters" of Provence (the others are Sénanque Abbey and Thoronet Abbey).
Its inside is devoid of any decorative elements, making it a perfect, if not austere, example of 12th century Cistertian architecture.
Construction of the abbey's church started in 1175. In 13th century, the cloister was built. The complex was pillaged and abandoned in 15th century and then restored as a parish church in 16th century. The monastery was disbanded in the French Revolution. The dilapidated buildings and parcel on which they stand were bought by the goverment in 1846, turned into a historic site and gradually restored for the public.
