Silmarils (company)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Silmarils is a French computer game software company named after the Silmarils of J. R. R. Tolkien's saga.

Silmarils was founded in 1987 by Louis-Marie and Andre Rocques. It produced games for PC, Amiga, Macintosh and Atari ST.

Silmarils is known for creating extremely frustrating games in the past. Titles like Robinson's Requiem where a player died of one of a dozen or so different sicknesses within a week are still ranked among the hardest games ever created. While very innovative with titles like Boston Bomb Club and Robinson's Requiem, the French company is most closely associated with its Ishar series. Crystals of Arborea was one of the first games to offer real-time 3D environment and a large world with very few limits on movement, the Ishar games only topped it with improved graphics and longer gameplay. During the past few years, however, the company has concentrated solely on 3D action games, ignoring its roots.
