"Silence Is Golden" is one of the heaviest songs that electronic rock group Garbage have ever recorded; it appeared on the band's eclectic third album, beautifulgarbage. Loud and abrasive, the song's vocal style is reminiscent of PJ Harvey, one of singer Shirley Manson's favourite artists.
[edit] Song Profile
"Silence Is Golden" was written and recorded on the Garbage tour bus during the group's tour supporting second album Version 2.0 in September 1999.
"Silence Is Golden" was written, recorded and mixed within 24 hours—a record for the band at that point! It was later edited and remixed during the 2000-2001 beautifulgarbage sessions.
The song's running time is 3:49 and is a mid-tempo schizo number which begins like a mutant big ballad where a sporadic colossal hammering interferes with the melodic sway of the song, which shifts from 6/8 to 4/4 at the 2 minute mark and builds to a climatic and anguished conclusion.
Initially "Silence Is Golden" was intended to be released on the band's proposed 2000 B-sides and remixes album, but the project was vetoed and the song ended up seeing the light of day on 2001's beautifulgarbage.
[edit] Live Performances
"Silence Is Golden" was first performed live in Denver, Colorado on 20 October 1999 and was regularly performed during each night of Garbage's MTV Campus Invasion Tour.
During the beautifulgarbage world tour the song was brought back and played in a slightly shorter and different form for most of the tour dates from Oct 2001–Aug 2002.
It was not played on the Bleed Like Me tour.
[edit] Quotes
- "It's my favourite song by a million miles. It sounds like honey and melted chocolate" - Shirley Manson, early 2000
- "I was reading a book at the time [of writing the song] about the surviving victims of physical and sexual abuse. I know a lot of my friends have survived incest or battery and something about the way the music sounded to me triggered off a thought; it's a song about being heard, a song to be heard." - Shirley Manson
