Silaba is a musical group from Senegal. Silaba's music is a mix between roots music and traditional African music. Silaba means "the long African road" in Malinke language. It is also the name of the first chord of the Kora, the traditional harp used by "Griots". Sadoo (lead singer and guitarist) and Lamine Kouyaté ( lead singer and Kora player) are the main actors in the band along with great percussionits from Senegal. The band released their first album ( also called Silaba) in 2005. Their first album is an autoproduction. Sadoo and Lamine Kouyaté are also working on some individual projects. For instance, Sadoo has already released two solo album ( Reality and Samawoy) whereas Lamine Kouyaté used to play in the national Senegalese ballet : "ballet Sorano". Lamine Kouyaté, originally from Casamance, is also trying to develop some musical projects and other type of projects in the Casamance area. The band already had the opportunity to tour in Europe (in Ireland). Their promotion in Europe is mainly done by a non-profit organisation : WoyClub. The main goal of this band is to shorten the distance between Africa and Western countries through music. If you listen to Silaba, you will notice that they sing in French, Wolof, English and Spanish and therefore they are already appreciated by a large internatioal audience.
In 2003, Silaba won a prize from the French ministry for Sport and Youth to use as funding for their album. [1] [2]
