Sign of One

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, the Sign of One is a faction in the Planescape campaign setting. The faction is more or less akin to modern-day solipsism. Each member of this faction believes that the rest of existence expands infinitely outward from him, and at the same time is encased within himself--That all that which he perceives is but reflections of himself and that, if his belief is strong enough, he may bend existence itself towards his vision of it. In other words they are imagining the entire multiverse. Some have even been able to create change in the universe by imagining it. A small sect even tried to resurrect a dead god. They ran the Hall of Speakers.

This may seem paradoxical on many levels to some. First, there is the issue of a single entity being synonymous with the infinite expanse of all things. Second, that there is more than one central entity, from which all things sprout. And third, that if everything were actually part of the same mass, then it become impossible for there to be differentiation between things.

The Signers (a word ascribed to members of the faction), see and understand this paradox, but instead of making the "mistake" that other factions make and avoiding it, the Signers instead embrace it as the true nature of all things.
