[edit] History

Sigma Lambda Gamma was founded by founding mothers: Gloria Cuevas, Julieta Miller, Maria Pineda, Danelle Riojas and Guadalupe Temiquel. Under the guidance of Esther Materon Arum and Mary Peterson, our eternal captains spent countless hours ensuring the sorority’s continued development as they continue to demonstrate a commitment to being “Sisters For Life – Hermanas Por Vida.”

On October 22, 1989, a group of women gathered at the Chicano Native American Cultural Center to form an organization of Latina women at the University of Iowa. Their goal was to form a group that would provide social and academic support to Latinas and women of all cultures.

After a lot of hard work and dedication, the Panhellenic Council at the University of Iowa recognized Sigma Lambda Gamma as a sorority on April 9, 1990. This is the day that Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority recognizes as their Founding date.

The cardinal principles of the organization are Academics, Community Service, Cultural Awareness, Morals & Ethics and Social Interaction. These principles are deeply rooted and respected in the organization, and all actions taken by Gammas everywhere serve to promote these principles. As of March 2007, Sigma Lambda Gamma has 87 Chapters, 6 Colonies, and 13 Alumnae Associations.

Today, Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority has undergraduate chapters all over the United States varying from New York to Texas and Florida to California. Our members have recognized the need for togetherness and support among women of all cultures at their universities and colleges and are dedicated to the overall success of women throughout the world.

[edit] Mission

Sigma Lambda Gamma strives to be the premier organization in providing the mechanism of empowerment to all women. Through a network of close to 3,000 multicultural sisters from collegiate chapters and alumnae associations located across the United States, we promote academic excellence and higher education for all women via a dedication and incorporation of the sorority principles – Academics, Community Service, Cultural Awareness, Morals & Ethics, and Social Interaction – in our lives.

[edit] Vision

Recognizing our responsibility to the progression of a positive global community, we stress the importance of morals, ethics, and education in our daily lives so that we serve the needs of our neighbors through a mutual respect and understanding of our varying cultures.
