[edit] The name

The Norse form of the name was *Sigmardalr or *Sigmudalr. The first element is the genitive case of a rivername Sigm(a) (now Simoa), the last element is dalr m 'valley, dale'. The meaning of the rivername is unknown (maybe derived from síga 'ooze, slide').

[edit] Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1983). The figure represent the profile of the prominent mountain Andersnatten (see below).

[edit] Geography and population

Most of the citizens live in Eggedal or the administrative centre Prestfoss. Sigdal is densely populated, dominated by mountains and valleys. Around 72% of the area is covered with forest, 20% is mountain areas. 4% of the area is cultivated. Agriculture, forestry and the kitchen-producing enterprise Sigdal Kjøkken are still important industries.

[edit] Andersnatten

Andersnatten is a well known mountain and landmark. The mountain has inspired painters visiting or living in Sigdal, notably Theodor Kittelsen, and is recognized by mountain climbers as a tough challenge.
