Sielun Veljet

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sielun Veljet ("Soul Brothers" or "Brothers of Soul") was a Finnish band, who started in 1983 and split after their 1991 3-CD Musta laatikko. The band's members were Ismo Alanko (vocals, guitar), Jukka Orma (guitar), Jouko Hohko (bass, guitar) and Alf "Affe" Forsman (drums). Alanko and Orma had earlier on played in the popular new wave music band Hassisen Kone. The music of Sielun Veljet was a sort of manic psycho-funk, with extremely intense live shows, as if they had been a more demented, shamanistic and psychedelic Finnish version of Red Hot Chili Peppers, but starting even before RHCP launched their own career. Sielun Veljet is considered a very influential band in Finland's rock scene, having left their mark on many Finnish bands following after them.

The vocalist Ismo Alanko wrote in Finnish, except for the albums Shit-Hot (recorded under the moniker L'Amourder, which was meant to be the band's more export-friendly international version) and Softwood Music Under Slow Pillars which were in English.

After the silence of over fifteen years Sielun Veljet released in 10 January 2007 an album called Otteita Tuomari Nurmion laulukirjasta ("Excerpts from the songbook of Tuomari Nurmio"), featuring cover versions of Tuomari Nurmio's songs from the band's archives; with many previously unreleased songs recorded around 1990, remixed and remastered by Jukka Orma. The album reached Number One in Finnish album charts, the best position ever for Sielun Veljet.
