[edit] History
Sie Kensou is a young martial artist with psychic powers. As Athena Asamiya's best friend, he has been a member of the Psycho Soldier team each time it entered the KOF tournament. The only KOF tournament in which the Psycho Soldier team did not participate was KOF 2003. Though mentally and physically talented, Kensou doesn't realize his potential, preferring to spend his time on socializing, eating, and reading manga instead of psychic and martial arts training.
Kensou was orphaned and left to fend for himself when he was just a child. He wandered through China for years before he met the kung fu master Chin Gentsai, who accepted Kensou as a pupil. Under Chin's tutelage, Kensou also began to manifest his psychic powers.
Chin and Kensou traveled and trained throughout Asia, constantly relocating after Chin's drunken rampages provoked the ire of locals. While in Japan, Kensou and Chin were challenged to a fight by a strongman but never lifted a finger; Athena Asamiya saw what was happening and knocked out the rude provocateur with one of her 'psycho balls'. Kensou inmediately fell in love with the girl, and though Athena has never regarded Kensou as anything more than her friend, they have been partners in crimefighting ever since along with their sensei, Chin.
[edit] Orochi Saga
In KOF '94 through KOF '97, though he built his own little fan base, Kensou received little media and fan adulation when compared with KOF's big stars. Instead, he became widely known for his notorious wardrobe malfunctions. They also met their biggest fan, Kaoru, a crippled girl inspired to relearn to walk after watching her favorite rag-tag team overcome tremendous challenges in several matches. She has since become a sort of roadie for the Psycho Soldiers.
[edit] NESTS Chronicles
Before KOF '99, while traveling in China, the Psycho Soldiers stumbled upon Bao, who was, as had been Kensou, a young and abandoned orphan with psychic powers. They took him in, and he and Kensou quickly became like brothers. About this time, Kensou's psychic powers also mysteriously began to weaken.
Kensou entered the KOF '99 tournament, though it became apparent to all the competitors that he had lost his psychic combat powers and was steadily losing the rest of his psychic powers. Determined to be as effective as he was in prior tournaments, he for once had trained hard in the off season to expand his martial arts repertoire. In the end, while escaping from the NESTS base after K' had defeated Krizalid, the Psycho Soldiers became split up once the compound began to collapse. A falling section of ceiling trapped Athena's leg, and just as a second section threatened to crush her completely, Kensou managed one last enormous burst of telekinesis to deflect the ceiling, free Athena, and bring them both to safety. Kensou, totally exhausted from the effort, passed out. Mysteriously, Bao also passed out at the same moment, though he had escaped the compound largely unscathed.
In KOF 2000, the Psycho Soldiers remained in Southtown while K' faced off against Zero, a renegade NESTS agent. In the aftermath, Kula Diamond attempted to destroy the NESTS orbital laser cannon and instead unleashed a barrage upon Southtown, which was largely turned to rubble. Bao impulsively jumped in the path of one blast, and though his psychic power deflected the blast straight back into the cannon, which helped Kula to finally destroy it, the effort brought him to the edge of death. He pleaded with the distraught Kensou to help him. Unsure of what he could do to help, Kensou attempted rescue breathing to sustain his dying friend. Not only did this save Bao, but it also somehow set off a reaction unleashing "the Power of the Dragon" in Kensou.
In KOF 2001, though they weren't as supercharged as they had been when he tapped his Power of the Dragon, Kensou's psychic powers were back to normal while Bao's powers had weakened considerably. Again, the Psycho Soldiers didn't make the finals, but we learn that Bao is secretly keeping critical information from his teammates about Kensou's powers. We also learn that Ron, the evil former member of the Hizoku, has taken an interest in Kensou's Power of the Dragon.
[edit] Tales of Ash
After that, Chin took Bao and Kensou away to train during KOF 2003. Though the Psycho Soldier team did not participate in KOF 2003, Athena chose not to miss the tournament and fronted the High School Girls team, which comprised of her, Hinako Shijou, and Malin.
Kensou returned to Japan just before KOF XI to form the Neo Psycho Soldier team with Athena and Momoko, a psychic and practitioner of capoeira. With Athena's continued growth in skill and power, the injection of new blood with Momoko, and Kensou's improved work ethic, the Psycho Soldiers presumably performed better than ever at this tournament (though they still failed to make the finals). We learn that Kensou has learned to voluntarily tap his Power of the Dragon for short periods and that Ron and his cadre are still watching Kensou from the shadows, biding their time until Kensou's power fully matures. While the KOF world worries about the intentions of a nascent Orochi cult and the seemingly malevolent activities of Ash Crimson, perhaps they should worry more about what it could mean if Ron somehow obtains Kensou and his full Power of the Dragon.
[edit] Personality
Kensou can be lazy, melodramatic, and unfortunate. He subscribes to the school of anime thought that all victories deserve an overdone pose, which tends to backfire on him in the form of "wardrobe malfunctions".
Despite his shortcomings, Kensou is funloving, has a heart of gold, and has a good sense of humor. He is fiercely loyal to the other Psycho Soldiers and would do absolutely anything for Athena, his best friend and diehard crush, and Bao, whom he regards as his little brother. Though the awareness of his growing power has rendered Kensou more egotistical, it has also seemed to bestow upon him a greater sense of responsibility. That, combined with the challenges he faced in KOF '99 and KOF 2000, has led to him finally taking his training more seriously. Though, despite Kensou's attempts at seriousness, his perpetually goofy side continues to show through.
[edit] Game Information
- Sie Kensou is actually an old SNK character from the video game Psycho Soldier. He was Player 2 (Athena Asamiya was Player 1). Even back then, he was comic relief: in scenes where both characters would jump from a high level to a low one, Kensou would fall flat on his face. This version of Kensou also appears as normal Kensou's Another Striker in KOF 2000 and recently in SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighter Clash DS as a SNK character card.
- As with several KOF characters, Kensou has changed his KOF outfit with each story arc in KOF (KOF '94 - '97 was the first arc, KOF '99 - 2001 was the second arc, and KOF 2003 - XII will probably be the third arc). However, its overall appearance remains similar.
- Kensou constantly snacks on nikuman (pork buns or Chinese Char Siu Bao). In some games of the series, he can perform a super move where he eats pork buns to regenerate his life bar. However, this super has random effects:
- Kensou eats a "regular bun", which refills some of his life bar.
- Kensou eats a "super bun", which refills his ENTIRE life bar (very rare).
- Kensou eats a "bad bun", which makes him cry and has no effect on his life bar (seen in KOF 2002).
- Kensou eats a bun too fast and humorously chokes on it, turning blue and coughing while losing a sizeable chunk of his life bar.
- Kensou has a unique HDM in his KOF '02 version. The "Eye of the Dragon" Blast, is an ultra fast Silver Bullet that upon contact, passes through an opponent and boomerangs back to Kensou, giving him a sizable attack boost should he make contact with the returning ball. Also noted, if Kensou should receive this "power-up" effect, he is then unable to use this move for the rest of the match, as the effect will last until the end of the fight.
[edit] Trivia
- Kensou has always been very popular with players because of his unorthodox yet effective fighting style and entertainment value. It is this popularity that made SNK bring him back for KOF XI, after being left out of KOF 2003.
- Despite their non-Japanese origins, Kensou and Robert Garcia speak the Osaka dialect of Japanese perfectly. In KOF '97 and KOF '98, before they battle each other, they perform a classic schtick from Osakan comedy. Paired with Choi, the three make up the "Osakan Dialect" edit team in KOF '98. Robert and Kensou also seem to be buddies, since Robert asks Kensou how things are going with Athena in his winquote to him in KOF '01.
- While Kensou is frequently the butt of jokes and so far only a supporting character in the KOF universe, he has the profound yet largely untapped "Dragon Psychic Power". On the occasions when he manages tap it, it puts him on par with KOF's powerful starring fighters. Only recently has he managed to do this with anything approaching regularity.
- Kensou is a talented guitar player (evident from the final scene from the game Psycho Soldier) and often plays lead guitar for Athena during her shows.
- Kensou appears in SNK's 1999 PlayStation RPG Athena: Awakening from the Ordinary Life as a supporting character.
- Kensou makes a cameo (as "Kensu") in the classic NES game, Crystalis, as one of the four sages. Athena also joins him, as "Asina."
- Kensou also appears in the Dragon's Lair stage in KOF: Maximum Impact 2.
