Sidney Wood

Sidney Wood (born November 1, 1911) was an American male tennis player.
Wood was born in Black Rock, Connecticut. In his career he has won one major tournament, Wimbledon Championships, in 1931 and reached one Davis Cup final in 1934. He is the father of David, Colin, Sidney II and W. Godfrey Wood and lives in Southampton, NY and Palm Beach, Florida.
Sid Wood's son Colin Wood is the subject in Diane Arbus' famous 1962 photograph Child with Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park.
His other son, Godfrey still holds the collegiate season record for goals against average in 1962 (1.27 GAA). His Harvard University record held as the lowest "goals against average" in collegiate hockey from 1962 until goalie Jimmy Howard from Maine broke it in 2004 (1.19 GAA).
Sid Wood's son Sidney Wood II, a natural athlete and star Yale tennis player was tragically killed in an early morning car accident along with teamates on a Florida highway. The cause of the accident is still unknown as their wallets and identification were missing when discovered.
