Sideroxylon (syn. Bumelia Sw.) is a genus of flowering plants of the Sapotaceae family. There are about 70 species, distributed mainly in the Neotropics, but also in Africa, Madagascar and the Mascarene islands. The only South African species, the White Milkwood tree, is associated with three historical sites, and these individuals were declared national monuments due to their unusual longivity. The Calvaria Tree on Mauritius island is claimed to have lived in symbiosis with the Dodo and to have suffered along with its demise.
