Side By Side By Sondheim

Side by Side by Sondheim is a musical revue featuring the songs of prolific Broadway and film composer Stephen Sondheim. Its title is derived from a tune in Company.
Conceived and directed by Ned Sherrin, it had its premiere on May 14, 1976 at London's Mermaid Theatre, where it ran for 59 performances. It subsequently transferred to Wyndham's Theatre and then the Garrick for a grand total of 806 performances. Millicent Martin, Julia McKenzie, David Kernan, and Sherrin comprised the original cast.
After six previews, the original Broadway production, with the same cast again directed by Sherrin, opened on April 18, 1977 at the Music Box Theatre, and later transferred to the now-demolished Morosco. Between the two venues, it ran for a total 384 performances. It is one of the few shows to have the distinction of its entire cast being nominated for a Tony Award. A subsequent national tour starred Martin, Larry Kert, Barbara Heuman, and Hermione Gingold. Numerous international productions have been mounted ever since.
Included songs vary from production to production. A double album released by RCA Records in 1976, and reissued on CD in 1990, included "Comedy Tonight"/"Love Is in the Air," "The Little Things You Do Together," "You Must Meet My Wife," "Getting Married Today," "I Remember," "Can That Boy Foxtrot!," "Too Many Mornings," "Another Hundred People," "Barcelona," "Being Alive," "I Never Do Anything Twice," "Beautiful Girls"/"Ah, Paree!"/"Buddy's Blues," "Broadway Baby," "You Could Drive a Person Crazy," "Everybody Says Don't," "There Won't Be Trumpets," "Anyone Can Whistle," "Send in the Clowns," "Pretty Lady," "We're Gonna Be All Right," "A Boy Like That," "The Boy From...," "If Momma Was Married," "Losing My Mind," "Could I Leave You?," "I'm Still Here," and "Side by Side by Side."
Because of its small cast and simple production requirements, the show is a popular choice for summer stock and community theatre productions.
