Shrug

A shrug is a form of nonverbal communication that is performed by lifting both shoulders up, and is an indication of an individual either not knowing an answer to a question, or not caring about a result. It may be accentuated with raised eyebrows and/or an exaggerated frown. Shrugging is derived from the act of comparing the weight of two objects in one's hands. Since a shrug indicates that the subject does not know the answer to a question, it would imply that they were weighing the matter between their hands.^{[citation needed]} A shrug merely involving the shoulders is a lazy form of the full shrug, which involves both shoulders and hands with palms facing upward.
