[edit] Plot Synopsis
Shrek the Third has Shrek and Fiona watching over their kingdom of Far Far Away, now that King Harold is a frog. When King Harold falls ill, Shrek and Fiona determine that if they can find a suitable heir to the throne of Far Far Away and bring him back, they can leave their current lifestyles behind and return to their swamp. The most promising candidate for the position of king is Fiona's younger cousin, Arthur (Artie) who proves to be much more of a problem than Shrek, Donkey, and Puss had bargained for.
While Shrek is away, Prince Charming attempts to take the throne of Far Far Away. To do that, he assembles a coup d'etat made up of Captain Hook, The Wicked Queen, a Cyclops, Rumpelstiltskin, Mabel the Ugly Stepsister, and as well as an army of witches and walking trees. The pregnant Fiona, her mother, Queen Lillian, and Doris the Ugly Stepsister recruit four of Fiona's closest princess friends, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, and Cinderella to help them hold off Prince Charming's quest for the throne, with added help from Pinocchio, the Three Little Pigs, the Big Bad Wolf, and the Gingerbread Man.

[edit] Soundtrack
In an interview with GQ in March 2007, record producer Timbaland confirmed that he will be contributing tracks to the soundtrack.[citation needed] Also, Smash Mouth, who recorded a version of "I'm a Believer" for the original movie, recorded a special version of Artie's Dance.[citation needed]
[edit] Production
With Viacom's acquisition of DreamWorks SKG, Shrek the Third will be the first Mike Myers film to be released by Paramount Pictures (which itself was bought by Viacom in 1994) since 1993's Wayne's World 2. On the 2004 show, Father of the Pride, Donkey (voiced by Eddie Murphy) was featured, solely to promote that Shrek 3 was to be released in Winter 2006.
Five actors from NBC's Saturday Night Live appear in the movie, two of whom are currently on the show; Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cheri Oteri, Amy Poehler, and Maya Rudolph. Two members from the Monty Python troupe, John Cleese and Eric Idle, are reunited in this movie. Cleese will be reprising his role as King Harold, while Idle will provide his voice for the new character Merlin. When the storyline was first announced, it said that King Harold would die, leaving the throne to Shrek. But due to the light-hearted nature of the other two films, and the fact that this was a childrens film, this was eventually changed to it being that the king simply 'fell ill'.
[edit] Sequel
Peter Zaslav said in an interview that the Christmas special Shrek the Halls will pickup from where Shrek the Third left off. [1]
The film will also be followed by another sequel, Shrek 4, which will be released in theatres in 2010. Shrek 4 is believed to be the final movie in the Shrek series.
