[edit] History

The airline was originally called Air Ananya, but after a helicopter was burnt at Jiri by Maoists and there were a couple of accidents and helicopters hit by bullets, Banwari Lal Mittal, now Chairman and CEO of Shree Airlines, consulted an astrologer who suggested changing the name of the airline. Thus Air Ananya became Shree Airlines. (Shree means auspicious beginning). [1]

[edit] Incidents and accidents

A Shree Airlines MI-17 helicopter carrying 4 crew and 20 passengers, including Nepal's Minister of State for Forest and Soil Conservation, Gopal Rai, and his wife, along with senior officials of the World Wide Fund for Nature, disappeared on 23 September 2006 on a flight from Ghunsa in Taplejung district to Kathmandu. There were reports that Taplejung residents heard a loud explosion. Rescuers in Nepal subsequently recovered the bodies of the 24 people killed in the crashed helicopter. It is not clear what caused the crash. A day of mourning is being observed. The government set up a seven-member probe commission to investigate the crash. [2] [3] [4] [5]
