Hello ShooterBoy! Welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I think it's very important for you to browse through some of the links below so as to become familiar with how Wikipedia works. If you need any help you can ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and another Wikipedian will show up shortly. Please remember to sign your name on talk pages by clicking Image:Wikisigbutton.png or by typing four tildes "~~~~"; this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you're already loving Wikipedia and plan on becoming a Wikipedian you might consider being "adopted" by a more experienced editor, just paste {{Adoptme}} into your userpage and you will gladly be adopted! You might also consider joining a WikiProject so as to collaborate with others in creating and improving articles of your interest. Click here for a directory of all the WikiProjects. Finally, please do your best to always fill in the edit summary field. Happy editing! frummer 11:08, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Adoption

I noticed that you have placed the {{adoptme}} tepmlate on your userpage. I'm looking to adopt at the moment, so let me know if you'd be happy to go ahead with that (on either of our talk pages). I'm normally online every hour or so between about 7pm and 9am UTC, if that makes a difference to you. Hope to hear from you soon! Chovain 07:13, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Great - I've updated your adoption userbox to reflect this. The idea here is that you can come to me if you have any questions or run into any troubles of any kind. I'll do my best to help you sort it out. I'll also try to offer friendly advice if I can.
You might want to add my talk page to your watchlist. If you ask me questions on my talk page, that will allow me to reply on my talk page, and let you know when I've answered the question. I'm watching your page, so you should feel free to reply to my messages here. This will help keep the conversations a bit easier to read.
One thing I've noticed already, is that your signature seems to be coming up without a link to your userpage. Are you signing by adding 4 tildes (~~~~)? Or are you typing the signature in manually? It's much easier to use the tildes, but you should check that the "signature" field is blank in your preferences (you might want to change it once you've found your feet though).
I'm interested to know: What kind of pages do you think you're interested in editing here?
Chovain 23:07, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Hey, ShooterBoy. I haven't heard from you in a while. Are you still around? Chovain(t|c) 00:29, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Hello

I'm moslty interested to create articles on criminality, like street gangs but more locally specialized

ShooterBoy 01:22, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

That sounds like it could be really interesting stuff. Before you start creating articles though, you should probably be aware of a couple of policies and guidelines that are might be relevant to you. I don't want to scare you away with this stuff: This is going to be a pretty long massage with lots of links and things in it, but it should hopefully save you a lot of frustration when you start making your own articles.
Before you step into the deep-end (and create your first new article), you might want to start out reading some articles in the area you're interested, and look at improving them. That will give you a good idea of how things work around here, and also get you in touch with other people who share your interests.
Here's a couple of pages you might want to start looking at:
  • Gang is probably relevant to you. It's not a brilliant article, but it's a good start: It needs lots more references, and needs the language improved a bit. On the discussion page, you'll notice it has a todo list. This could give you a bit of stuff to do if you want to start improving this article.
  • Category:Gangs is a category (like a group of pages) with a few different gang articles in it. I haven't had a good look through these myself, so I don't know if they're any good. I wouldn't necessarily use it as a guide to the kind of pages you can get away with creating yourself, but there's bound to be heaps of stuff that needs editing in there.
  • Category:Criminology is another category. It's a lot broader than what you're likely to be interested in, but should give you a few ideas.
When you do want to start writing new articles, you should keep the following points in mind:
  • It sounds like you're looking to write about groups that are more of local interest than anything. You may want to look at WP:LOCAL. It's a guideline that gives a few pointers about what should and shouldn't go into its own article. It relates mainly to articles about local places and buildings, but I think it also has some good pointers for the what you're interested in.
  • A lot of pages written about groups of people can get deleted pretty quickly around here. When experienced users see a page getting created that is about a group, if they feel the group is not notable (I'll explain what that means below), they will request speedy deletion of the page.
  • Speedy deletions happen within a few minutes, so there's not much time to correct any problems. It's best to make sure your articles assert notability up front.
  • Notability is a really important concept here on Wikipedia. In general, something should only go in if other people (outside wikipedia) have written about it in books or newspapers. To find out more about what notability is on Wikipedia, you might want to skim over WP:N.
  • There are different levels of notability needed depending on what you're writing about. If you're writing about people or groups of people (as it sounds like you want to), the best guideline for you is WP:BIO. It basically says that two or more independent should have published non-trivial information about the people you're writing about. Independent means that it can't be written or published by the people you're writing about. Non-trivial means that the sources have to be writing about them; It's not enough that the source just mentions them.
While you're editing, if there's anything you want me to look over, comment on, edit myself, or even research, feel free to drop me a note. I absolutely love editing pages I know nothing about.
Let me know if you have any problems or questions! Chovain 03:16, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Signing

There's still something not quite right with your signatures. Could you do me a favour, and check the "Signature" field in your preferences? It should be blank. You can change it later when you have a better handle on things, but other editors may get annoyed if it's not set properly.

If that field is already blank, then it's possible you're signing the hard way. There's no need to type your signature out in full when signing. The correct way to sign is with 4 tildes (~~~~). It will automatically expand out to your username (with a link to your user page) and the current time. When I type 4 tildes it expands to this: Chovain 03:22, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Crack Down Posse

I've successfully argued that your article should have 5 days to prove itself worthy. Make sure you leave the "prod" tag that the administrator other editor has placed on the article, otherwise you might end up getting deleted without notice (I'll help you decide when it is time for the tag to go).

Keep in mind, the Speedy Delete tagger's issue with the article was that it didn't "assert notability". When doing the rewrite, you should make sure you cite reliable references. I noticed a few hits to Canadian news sources when I Googled for "Crack Down Posse". These should help your cause greatly.

Do you expect 5 days to be enough to assert notability? Chovain 01:11, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Something I just noticed: The Crack Down Posse page had already been deleted,[1] and you've recreated it. Just so you know, that's normally considered bad form here. It's best to discuss it with the deleting administrator (which you can find in the article's deletion log). You're lucky in this case that no-one got upset.
Something you might want to consider in future when creating articles that are going to be initially substandard, is you can create them as subpages of your userpage. Once you are happy that noone is likely to ask for the article to be deleted, you can "move" the page to main article namespace. Chovain 04:47, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Hey - Crack Down Posse is likely to have been deleted by the time you read this. I've moved a copy of it to User:ShooterBoy/Crack Down Posse so that you can work on it in your userspace without fear of it being deleted. Let me know when it's ready, and I'll help you move it into the main space. Chovain 04:47, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
